"What was that?"
"A listening device."
Isabel quickly checked the hem of her clothes. "When did..."
Adrian had only grabbed her hand; he had never gotten close to her.
The only other person who had was Catherine.
But she hadn't been asleep then; she was fully conscious. If Catherine had gotten that close, she would have known.
"This is from the Gray Zone. It doesn't need to be placed by hand. It can burrow into the fabric of your clothes and attach itself to your skin."
Isabel was incredulous. "But I would have felt something."
"That's what makes it so effective. It's military-grade technology."

Only then did Julian explain the bigamy issue.
"Your divorce certificate is real. But in the government system, your divorce from Adrian was never officially registered. Legally speaking, you two are still married."
"What?!"
After the initial shock, Isabel quickly calmed down.
It made sense. In a place like Westbridge, he always got his way.
"But you're not Isabel anymore, so don't worry about it. He has no authority over you now."
Julian patted her head. "Still, I have to admire you. You must have loved him a lot to have your official records tied to his."
Isabel explained, "If I had parents, I wouldn't have needed to. My records were originally with my grandmother. My mother never added me to the Hayes family's registry. After my grandmother passed away, I was on my own. So at the time, since we were getting married, it made sense to combine them."
Her explanation was plausible.
Julian didn't press the matter. "Go get some rest."
Isabel went to her room.
She found it hard to sleep.
The fact that she was still legally married to Adrian was a thorn in her side.
But now that she had a new identity, it was difficult to bring it up.
Her only option was to speed up her plans. Once she dealt with Selena, she could finally get that divorce.
