“Mommy!” Oliver’s eyes, big and bright, lit up the moment he saw Isabel, and he immediately reached out for a hug.

But Isabel sidestepped him.

She moved to shut the door at once.

Oliver, however, squeezed inside. “Mommy, I brought you your favorite breakfast pastries.”

He held up a food container, his face beaming with excitement.

“Tsk, you’re like a ghost that can’t be shaken, just like your deadbeat dad.” Julian Reed emerged at the sound of their voices, his expression darkening at the sight of Oliver. “Is being shameless a family trait for you Blackwells?”

“What did you just say?” Mrs. Blackwell, who had followed Oliver, stepped forward. She wouldn’t tolerate anyone speaking ill of her grandson or the Blackwell family. “You may have some standing in Aurelia City, but you’re nothing in front of the Blackwell family. Mrs. Blackwell was seething but couldn't find the words to argue.

She turned to pull Oliver away. “Oliver, Grandma has told you many times, she is not your mother. If she were, she wouldn’t be so cold to you. No real mother would treat her own child this way. Be a good boy and come back to the room with Grandma for breakfast.”

Oliver stood his ground stubbornly. “She is my mommy. I can recognize her. She’s cold to me because I did something wrong before. That’s why I have to apologize properly.”

He looked up at Isabel, his face earnest. “Mommy, I know you’re angry that I called Selena ‘Mommy’ before. I’ll never do it again. You’re my only mommy. Please don’t push me away. I know I was wrong.”

“Why are you apologizing to her?!” Victoria snapped. “Your father and Selena are getting married soon. Selena will be your mother then. It’s fine for you to call her that. As for this woman, she is Isabel Ashford. She has nothing to do with you. Let’s go.”

Her patience worn thin, she grabbed Oliver and pulled him away.
