Isabel set the test tube down. She turned her head to look at the stunned Dylan and said in a steady voice, “You should go find Selena. What’s happening here is my personal business. I have no intention of letting Selena get away with what she did to me, but I can’t let it interfere with the progress of our experiments either.”

Dylan slowly recovered from his shock. “So, you’re saying you don’t need me anymore?”

Isabel shook her head. “That’s not what I mean. If you go over there, you can keep me updated on what’s happening, can’t you?”

“An inside man?” Dylan raised an eyebrow.

Isabel smiled. “You could put it that way.”

Dylan knew what she was getting at, but he didn’t press the issue. He simply waved a hand over his shoulder as he walked out of Lab 1.

Only then did Isabel allow her shoulders to slump. She looked down at her right hand, which was now trembling uncontrollably from the exertion.

Her expression was cold and dark.

Selena stopped in front of Lab 14 and thanked the people who had followed her with a gentle smile.

“You don’t need to worry about me. What happened on that day was my fault. I hurt Isabel’s hand, and I’m willing to accept the consequences. Besides, we’ve made significant progress on Y-2. It doesn’t matter if I’m in Lab 1 or Lab 14. What matters is the person conducting the research.”

The newer researchers were completely taken in by her.

They didn't know the Isabel from before.

All they had heard were rumors: she had been dismissed from the program to get married, but the marriage had failed, and now she wanted back in. But six years had passed. This wasn't a place she could just waltz back into.

If she had been the one to develop Y-1, maybe.

So they all flocked to Selena.

Selena had Adrian backing her.

They might claim to be like brother and sister, but anyone could see there was something more between them.

Sucking up to her now was a smart move.

The veteran researchers, however, were more cautious.

They knew what Isabel was capable of.

But after being dismissed, she had returned only as Dylan’s assistant.
