Willow looked up, momentarily dazed by the sight of Waller's broad, protective back. The caregiver's voice brought her back to reality.

She stepped out from behind him. Waller, sensing her movement, turned anxiously. “Let me handle this.”

“Don't worry,” she murmured, already walking past him.

Waller couldn't bring himself to stop her and followed close behind.

Though everyone was speaking softly, the sounds were enough to stir Klein from his sleep. He slowly opened his eyes, first seeing the caregiver and Beasley, who were closer to him. He instinctively looked for Willow and found her on the balcony, a tall young man standing behind her.

Klein recognized him. It was Waller, one of the men Ms. Whitmore had introduced to his daughter.

His first reaction was a pleasant surprise. He had assumed that after their initial meeting at Ms. Whitmore’s house, Willow and Waller had lost touch.

What an unexpected turn of events!

Beaming, Klein started to sit up, and the caregiver rushed to help him.

Willow also hurried to her father’s side. “Did we wake you?”

Klein shook his head, smiling. “I woke up on my own. I’ve slept long enough today, I want to get up and walk around.”

He had slept for an hour or two since drinking some milk around four o'clock, and he felt like his bones would turn to dust if he didn't move.

“Careful, sir,” Waller said, moving to Willow’s side and naturally offering a hand to help Klein out of bed.

“Waller, you’re here! I was asleep, I didn’t even know,” Klein said, his tone deliberately familiar as he spoke directly in front of Beasley.
