Donovan had neither the interest nor the patience to hear Renee out.
At last, he cut her off dismissively. "You have two minutes. Make it quick."
His coldness made her seethe inside, but since she'd come with a purpose, she had no choice but to swallow her bitterness.
"Fine," she said tightly. "I'll get straight to the point. Those antiviral drugs are in huge demand right now. I understand your company raising prices in this climate, but I heard from your marketing director yesterday that the wholesale cost has gone up 200%. Isn't that a bit too much?"
Donovan's tone grew impatient. "If you think it's too high, go somewhere else."
A flu outbreak had been spreading fast, leaving several dead in certain regions. The panic was magnified online, leading people to hoard medicine and clear out pharmacies. Supplies were short everywhere.
Renee owned one of the country's largest pharmacy chains. For years, she had relied on Kane Pharmaceuticals for supply, and their products had always been her bestsellers.
And now, the hottest flu remedies on the market were all Kane Pharmaceuticals exclusives. Pharmacies were scrambling to stock up, reselling them at steep markups.
For Renee, this was a golden opportunity she couldn't afford to miss.
"Don," she softened her voice, trying to play on familiarity. "I can understand you raising prices for outsiders. But for me? After all these years of collaboration, can't you keep things as they were? Not to mention, Tony's saved your family's lives more than once—"
"That's his duty as a doctor," Donovan interrupted coolly. "It has nothing to do with me."
"If you say so," she ground out.
Still unwilling to give up, she pressed on, "And what about Anne? You broke off the engagement and left her devastated. Her health and spirit are in ruins… She talks about ending her life every day. Her life was practically ruined—she doesn't even have a future.
