To cut down on gossip and avoid tarnishing Donovan's reputation, Giselle had already agreed with him to keep their marriage under wraps for the time being.
That morning, she shadowed him as his "assistant" through a board meeting, and afterward sat quietly in his office, listening in as he discussed a new antibiotic project with the R&D team.
She had studied medicine, and though she'd spent the past few years working as a vet, she wasn't a complete outsider to pharmaceutical science. She could follow most of the technical discussions and understand the jargon, even though she wasn't qualified for a high-level research role.
With her quick learning, she could easily handle other positions around the company.
By the time the clock ticked past eleven, the office finally quieted down.
Donovan was still buried in paperwork, his focus unwavering. Giselle slumped onto the couch with a groan.
"You keep working," she muttered. "I need a nap—I'm exhausted."
Without looking up, he replied, "There's a room inside. Go lie down there. Once I'm done, we'll go out for lunch."
She'd almost forgotten the hidden door to his private lounge. Compared to the couch, a proper bed with air conditioning sounded much better. She quickly got up and slipped inside.
Meanwhile, Donovan pressed on with his endless tasks. As the CEO, he was expected to handle everything from reviewing projects and approving proposals to attending events and negotiating with partners.
His recent hospitalization had left him behind schedule, but thanks to his unmatched efficiency and passion for pharmaceuticals, he soon had everything back under control. After all, he was a decisive, no-nonsense man.
30 minutes later, a knock sounded at the door.
"Come in," he said curtly.
Leonard stepped in and said, "Mr. Kane, Mdm. Moore is here. She says it's urgent."
"I've been meaning to explain, but I've been tied up at work."
Donovan's attention never left his work. He couldn't even be bothered to listen to her nonsense.
Sensing his lack of response, Renee pressed on. "Don, please don't hold it against Anne. After all, both of you are engaged.
"And honestly, she only lost her temper because of how far you went with Giselle. She's the one who was hurt the most."
"Are you finished?" Donovan slammed his pen onto the desk, his expression dark. "If you are, leave. I won't waste another second on this nonsense."
But instead of leaving, Renee lowered herself on the couch and took a sip of the tea Leonard brought her.
"Don, I didn't just come here to apologize for Anne. There's something far more important I need to discuss with you in person."
