Grace's face was twisted with fury. Her chest heaved, her eyes were bloodshot, and her entire body trembled.
"Gracie, what's wrong?" Ethan asked, though he already knew.
Smack! Before he could finish, she rushed forward and slapped him hard across the face.
"Ethan, you bastard! You filthy piece of trash!" she cried out, her voice breaking into a raw scream. "You did something utterly disgusting behind my back! You even deceived me for 30 years! You make me sick!"
Ethan stood there, frozen under the storm of her rage. He didn't fight back and didn't explain himself.
His actions were almost mechanical, yet there was a strange trace of relief in his eyes. After carrying this burden for decades, having it finally out in the open almost felt like a relief.
Caught in the middle, Donovan was at a loss. He stayed silent, unsure of what he could possibly do.
It turns out that Grace had come home early that day. She was tired, so she had gone straight to bed.
A moment later, she heard movement in the house, so she got up and headed downstairs.
Passing by the study, she noticed the door slightly ajar. Then, she peeked inside and saw the two brothers talking in serious, hushed tones.
Curious and concerned, Grace leaned closer to listen. She overheard the entire story of Ethan's affair and his bastard child.
By the time it sank in, she was trembling all over. Her tears were streaming uncontrollably.
"What's wrong?" Dorothea asked. She heard the noise upstairs and hurried up, with Giselle following close at her heels.
"Dorothea," Grace sobbed, clinging to her. "Ethan has had a mistress all along. He's kept another home, and that bastard of his is even older than Zach. For all these years, I've been kept in the dark. I bore him children, ran this household inside and out, and this is how he repays me…"
