With a blank expression, Donovan turned to Ethan.
"If you agree to send him abroad, I can help make the arrangements."
He usually never meddled in Ethan's personal affairs. Even the existence of an illegitimate son wasn't something he cared to involve himself in. But this time, the bastard son in question was Gideon—and that made all the difference.
The thought of Gideon and Giselle's past was enough to sour his mood. Pretending it didn't matter was impossible, unless he never had to see the man again.
Seeing Donovan side with her gave Grace new confidence.
"Ethan, you get it now, don't you?" she pressed on. "Insisting on keeping that brat around means you're setting yourself against the entire family! If you want our family to stay intact, you had better do as I say—"
"Shut up!"
Ethan finally snapped. Slamming his fork down, he roared, "He's my son—my kin! Why should I abandon him?
"Yes, I made a mistake years ago, but what do you want me to do now? Kill him?
"And don't you dare think you can threaten me with divorce! Zach is grown now. If you can't live with me anymore, then so be it. We're done!"
With that, he shoved his chair back and stormed out, leaving the rest in stunned silence.
Grace broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Dorothea, did you hear that? He's ready to divorce me too! After everything I've contributed to this family, is this how I end up? Getting cast aside?
Dorothea, who had initially tried to defend Grace, finally lost her patience. Watching Grace push her luck, she snapped too.
"Enough! Stop crying," she barked, her voice sharp with authority. "Today is Don's birthday—this was supposed to be his lucky year. And here you are, making a spectacle in his own house. Pull yourself together!"
Even Giselle regretted hosting the party. What was meant to be a birthday celebration for Donovan had devolved into an ugly shouting match between Grace and Ethan, ending with sobs at the dinner table.
"How pitiful," she thought.
Wiping her tears, Grace choked out, "Dorothea, you saw how Ethan acted tonight. He doesn't want his family anymore. He's chosen that bastard son over us! Do you honestly expect me to put up with that? Do you want me to divorce him too?
"Zach may be an adult, but ever since the car accident, he's been unstable. If Ethan and I really divorce, what if his temper flares again? His career could be jeopardized, and his future will be ruined…"
