"Mrs. Kane Senior, I would never lie to you about something this serious," Renee said as soon as she arrived, producing Anne's prenatal paperwork, including blood test results and an ultrasound report.
Grace took the documents first and studied them carefully. She found that the report showed Anne had already been pregnant for two months.
"Renee, this is too much," Grace snapped, flaring with anger. "How could you encourage your daughter to scheme against my son behind our backs after all these years of friendship? What were you thinking?"
Renee remained unnervingly calm. Years of navigating the ruthless business world had made her far tougher than Grace, who was used to a life of comfort and privilege.
She forced a small, almost apologetic smile and softly said, "Gracie, I understand why you're upset. When I first heard about what happened between Anne and Zach, I was furious too, but they are adults with their own choices and emotions.
"As parents, we cannot control them. Do you really think I would deliberately push Anne toward Zach? I have my own burdens to bear. Losing Sebastian was more than enough pain for one lifetime. I have no interest in meddling in Anne's private life. If you cannot understand that, then I have nothing left to explain."
Grace's anger softened for a moment at Renee's weary tone. Still, she couldn't forget that Anne had once been engaged to Donovan and had previously faked a pregnancy to deceive the Kanes. Could this be another repeat of the same scheme?
"My parents are from the same generation as you and Mrs. Kane, so being with Zach isn't out of place. About the timing, we were together a month before I was taken into custody. We didn't take any precautions, so the child is his without a doubt."
The Kanes were left speechless by Anne's calm, well-argued explanation. Deep down, each of them felt that Zach had been sullied by this woman. He was the eldest son of the well-cared-for Kane family, and when he married, they expected him to match with a respectable, wellborn lady, not someone like Anne.
Dorothea thought for a moment and then said coldly, "We can't accept a child like this. Make sure she gets an abortion as soon as possible."
