"Renee, this all happened so suddenly. Honestly, I still haven't processed it," Grace said with a strained smile. "My advice is still the same. Anne should end the pregnancy. Zach is only 25 years old and still immature. He's not ready to be a husband, let alone a father. He just graduated and hasn't even started his career yet. How could he possibly take care of a family now?"
"I agree," Ethan said, surprisingly taking Grace's side for once. He looked at Renee with clear irritation. "Don't forget how your daughter ruined Donovan's reputation this time. What she did was disgraceful. I could never forgive something like that, and there's no way we'll go through with this marriage alliance.
"Don't take us for fools. If you really care about your daughter's reputation for the rest of her life, then you know exactly how to handle this in a low-profile way."
Seeing how firm they both were, Renee took a deep breath, forcing herself to stay composed.
"Alright," she said softly, slipping back into her usual tone of weary sorrow. "Since you've both made yourselves clear, I won't insist. After losing my son, I no longer have the strength to fight the world anyway.
"Anne made a mistake because I failed as a mother. If she ends up an unwed mother, then that's her punishment. In relationships like this, it's always the woman who gets hurt. Your son walks away unscathed, so of course you're not worried. Fine. I'll figure out a way to deal with it myself…"
Her voice trembled as she spoke, and the faint sob in her tone tugged at Grace's heart. After all, they had been close friends for years, sharing secrets and supporting each other through countless moments. Despite her anger, Grace couldn't help feeling guilty.
Dorothea sighed too, at a loss for what to do.
"Let's just leave it at that. We'll get going now. I'm sorry, Mrs. Kane Senior," Renee said.
"Who would dare send you to prison?" Renee said sharply, then fixed Anne with a piercing stare. "But first, tell me the truth. Are you really pregnant this time? Are you certain the baby is Zachary's?"
"I'm a hundred percent sure. I was surprised when the doctor told me. I used protection the other times with Zachary, but I remembered later that the last time we were together, my period had just ended, and I thought it was safe, so I didn't use anything, and that's how it happened," Anne said without hesitation.
"I never thought it would be such perfect timing. Maybe even fate wants to help me," she added, feeling more fortunate than ever now that her greatest rival, Giselle, was dead and she was pregnant at the perfect moment.
A cold, triumphant smile tugged at Renee's lips. "Good. As long as you're carrying a child fathered by a man from the Kane family, that's all that matters. Whether you actually marry into the Kane family is no longer important. I have plenty of ways to keep you out of prison."
