"Oh, Don's finally home!" Dorothea was the first to stand. She walked over to him with a bright smile.
"We've been waiting for you. Our home has an honored guest tonight. Someone I'd like you to meet!" she said.
An honored guest?
Donovan cast a casual glance at the beautiful stranger sitting on the couch. "What do you mean?" he asked, his brows lifting slightly in confusion.
"That's Ms. Sterling," Dorothea warmly explained. "She's the heiress to Concord Pharmaceuticals. Her mother and I are old friends. They just returned to Valanthea a few days ago for a visit. When she heard about what happened, I decided to invite Ms. Sterling over to meet you."
Hearing that, Donovan understood the implications well enough. He coolly countered, "What exactly have they heard about?"
"About you being widowed, of course," Grace chimed in, smiling as she joined the conversation. "Don, Ms. Sterling is in a similar situation. She was engaged once, but the engagement was called off for certain reasons. Since you're both single now, we thought it would be nice for you two to get acquainted."
In the end, it was nothing more than a family-arranged blind date. After all, it had been over a year since Giselle's death.
Donovan's life was supposedly back to normal, and he wasn't a spring chicken either. Naturally, the Kanes thought it was time for him to remarry and start a new family.
"Don't make me say something unpleasant," Donovan scoffed, not bothering to hide his irritation.
He didn't want to hear another word, nor did he want to stay for dinner. He turned on his heel to leave.
"Wait! Where are you going?" Dorothea asked, blocking his path. "You should at least say hello to Ms. Sterling before you go!"
Just as Dorothea's words fell, Marselle Sterling had already made her way behind Donovan. "Hi, Mr. Kane. "I'm Marselle Sterling. Nice to meet you. Let's be friends, shall we?"
At the mention of her name, Donovan froze mid-step.
Hearing that, Donovan snapped out of it. He quickly averted his gaze.
At that moment, Ethan came up beside him and whispered with a grin. "Don, you noticed it too, didn't you? Ms. Sterling looks just like Giselle. Honestly, that's exactly why I thought you two should meet. How about you get her phone number first? You two can talk privately later."
Donovan's heart had been calm before, cold even. But the moment he heard that, his expression darkened in an instant.
"Who arranged this?" he roared, his eyes burning with fury. "Do none of you have anything better to do? Is this what you call fun now?"
At that, the Kanes fell silent. Even Marselle's smile froze, disbelief flickering in her eyes as she stared at him.
Donovan was suddenly consumed by a blind rage. The place became unbearable instantly.
Without another word, he turned and stormed out.
