Both Giselle and Gideon were overwhelmed by despair. Though he tried to appear calm and encouraging, Gideon couldn't hide the worry weighing on his heart.
The seizure had left Giselle exhausted. After a brief spell of sadness, she drifted back into sleep.
Gideon, however, couldn't rest at all when he returned to his room. Sleep evaded him completely, because he didn't know when her next seizure would come—maybe the next minute, maybe in a few hours, or perhaps tomorrow. The image of her body convulsing in agony haunted him so vividly that he could hardly breathe.
The following morning, he asked the housekeeper to keep a close watch on Giselle before driving alone to visit her attending physician, Dr. Ross Bennett.
In the doctor's living room, Gideon spoke fluent Edevanian as he described Giselle's condition from the night before. His voice carried a trace of anxiety as he asked, "She was stable for three months. Why did she suddenly relapse? What triggered it? Could it have something to do with swimming?"
Ross remained calm as he explained, "Epilepsy is very difficult to cure completely. Even with medication, episodes can still occur from time to time. The triggers are complex, including poor diet, exhaustion, and intense physical activity. Most importantly, emotional stress can also have a major impact."
When the doctor mentioned emotions, Gideon fell silent.
He thought back to the previous day. After swimming, she had been completely fine, full of energy and in good spirits. That night, she had fallen asleep easily and slept soundly until morning. It couldn't have been the exercise.
Then the memory of what happened afterward came rushing back. She had overheard Ethan talking and found out that Donovan was getting married back home. Her mood had dropped in an instant, and he had only made things worse by adding a few cruel, self-serving remarks. She had completely lost control, crying out in anguish before collapsing to the floor. That same night, the seizures returned.
Throughout the meal, he gently reminded her of the dietary precautions she needed to follow, repeating his warnings not to go near anything that could put her in danger. When he saw a hint of color returning to her cheeks, he finally spoke the words he had been holding back.
"Giselle, there's something important I need to tell you."
She looked up at him, puzzled. "What is it?"
"I've decided to send you home tomorrow," he said quietly. "It's time to let everyone know the truth—that you're still alive."
