Giselle had no desire to return to Donovan, not when her body remained fragile and marred by the past. Seeing him live a happy life with someone else would only tear open wounds she had worked so hard to heal.
Staying hidden in this quiet, distant village felt like the only peace she could ever hope for. A life stripped of chaos and desire was exactly what she needed.
As she thought about it, a strange sense of gratitude stirred in her heart. In a way, she was thankful for Gideon's decision back then—for taking her away from Donovan's world and fabricating the news of her death.
From that moment on, she had been erased from Donovan's life entirely. Every bond that once tied them together had been wiped clean, as if fate itself had pressed the reset button on their story.
Gideon grew worried that she might have been too distressed and could suffer another episode, so he called her name softly while knocking on the door.
After a while, Giselle managed to calm herself down. Forcing her emotions under control, she opened the door and tried to smile. "I'm sorry," she said. "I overreacted earlier. Maybe it's because of my condition. I've been thinking about it for a while, and I've decided to stay abroad permanently. Besides, I'm recovering well now, so I want to find a job. Sitting around all day just makes me overthink things."
Gideon's expression hardened instantly. "Work? Forget about that. Whatever you need, I'll take care of it. I can support you for the rest of your life if I have to. I don't want you going out and putting yourself under unnecessary stress. It's too dangerous."
"There's nothing risky about it," Giselle replied calmly. "I'd only look for something related to veterinary work. I'd be around animals, not people. Animals won't upset me."
Gideon frowned. "That's out of the question. Animals carry allergens. I can't let you take that risk."
He thought for a moment, then offered, "How about this—once I finish my current projects, I'll help you open a pet shop. You can stop by whenever you want, and I'll have employees handle the rest."
"Let's talk about that later," she said.
His expression softened into something fragile and tender. "Giselle, get some rest these next few days. Don't let your mind wander too much, and remember to take your medication on time. I'll have Janelle take care of you while I'm gone."
She frowned. "What do you mean? Where are you going?"
"There's a new app my company just launched," Gideon explained. "It's run into a serious technical problem that no one else can fix. I need to go back home to handle it personally."
"You're going back home?" she asked.
He nodded. "Yes."
