Zachary felt a stir of emotion when he heard Giselle's name.
"Why are you asking so much? She's been gone for a year," he said, recalling her long-forgotten face and the tragedy from a year ago.
He didn't really want to bring it up again.
Marselle smiled lightly. "If you like someone, of course you'd be curious about the ex."
"What do you want to know?" Zachary asked.
Marselle said, "I want to know if Donovan truly cared for his late wife."
Zachary stated the matter-of-factly. "Does that even need asking?"
Zachary lifted his glass and took a sip of water before recounting Giselle's story. He described her family background, her complicated relationship with Donovan, and the tragic circumstances of her death. He left nothing out, explaining how completely devastated Donovan had been.
Marselle sat in stunned silence, completely absorbed by the details of Giselle's death. It took her a long moment to recover, and her thoughts felt tangled and unsettled.
Zachary paused briefly before adding, "As an old friend, I'd advise you not to get involved. Donovan is a difficult man. He's cold and distant by nature. Aside from his wife, Giselle, I've never seen him show interest in any other woman.
"Since Giselle passed, he's been like a walking corpse, consumed entirely by work. He barely speaks more than ten sentences a month. If you try to date or marry him now, you'll only be inviting trouble for yourself."
Marselle was silent for a moment, absorbing his words.
From Zachary's perspective, it would be good if Donovan remarried. Starting a new chapter could help him finally step out of the shadow of the past.
In every respect, Marselle surpassed Anne. If she were to end up with Donovan, it would please every member of the Kane family, and Zachary had no objections.
"Thank you," Marselle said, slowly shaking off the shock Giselle's photo had caused her. She smiled faintly and teased, "Don't worry. I'm confident I'll become your future aunt within six months. By then, we'll truly be family."
She would not allow herself to be bested by a woman who was no longer alive.
"Then I suppose I should wish you luck," Zachary said calmly.
