"What condition? Say it!" Donovan barked.
"I want…" Marselle met his gaze squarely. "I want you to marry me. Right now."
Her demand was so absurd that Donovan didn't even bother to argue. Rage flared in his eyes. In the next instant, his hand shot out and clamped around her throat.
"Tell me the truth!" His voice was hoarse, his face twisted with fury. Like a man possessed, he squeezed harder, his red-rimmed eyes boring into hers. "Where did the photo come from? Speak!"
"You—ah!" Marselle gasped, clawing at his hand as her airway tightened. "Let go... I can't... breathe..."
But Donovan's grip only tightened, as though he truly meant to strangle her.
Her face flushed red, eyes rolling back as she fought for air. Desperation forced out a rasping whisper. "If… you kill me… you'll never… find her…"
At those words, Donovan seemed to snap out of it. The fury blazing inside him slowly ebbed, and his grip began to loosen.
Yes—this woman was his only lead. If he lost control and killed her, every trace of Giselle would vanish with her.
He released her abruptly, shoving her to the floor with such force that she hit the ground hard, a dull thud echoing through the room. Pain shot up her spine, leaving her breathless and trembling, too weak to rise.
His mind was a blur, filled only with Giselle's face from that photo and the single, impossible thought that she might still be alive. Every instinct screamed to know where the picture had come from.
He fought to contain the storm raging inside him, then lowered his voice. "I'm sorry," he said. "I lost control. I shouldn't have done that."
He had never apologized to anyone in his life. Yet now he stood before this infuriating woman, suppressing his pride. His tone softened, rough but sincere.
"You know how much that photo means to me. Tell me the truth. Whatever you want in return, I'll give it to you."
Marselle gave a cold little laugh. "Didn't I already tell you? Marry me."
