Over the past year, it had been Gideon who stayed by Giselle's side, tending to her every need when she was at her weakest. He helped her walk, carried her up and down the stairs, even bathed and washed her hair for her. They had even crossed that final line between man and woman.
The thought of it made Donovan's heart twist painfully in his chest. His hands and feet turned cold.
Giselle had been gravely injured and unconscious, only to be taken away by his own nephew. For an entire year, she had lived with him as though they were husband and wife. Meanwhile, Donovan, her lawful husband, had been kept entirely in the dark, left thousands of miles away, with no part in her life at all.
By all reason, he should have exploded in rage. He should have hunted Gideon down, torn him apart, and maybe even beaten Ethan half to death just to vent this suffocating humiliation and hatred.
But after being tormented over and over by a mix of hope and heartbreak, Donovan was utterly drained. He no longer had the will or the strength to vent his pain.
Only two thoughts lingered in his weary mind. The first was that Giselle was truly, undeniably alive. The second was the question that haunted him—where was she? How far would he have to go to find her, and would he ever see her again in this lifetime?
He lay on his side on her bed, holding the pillow she once slept on and breathing in the faint trace of her scent that still clung to it. That familiar fragrance slowly wrapped around him, blurring his thoughts until he drifted into a heavy, dream-laden sleep.
In his dream, an endless dark ocean stretched before him.
He stood on a speeding motorboat, watching as Giselle, clad in a striking bikini, rode the waves fearlessly. Towering walls of water crashed around her, yet she moved with elegance, laughing freely as she crouched, rose, and leaped into the air. He had never seen her so vibrant, so full of joy.
Suddenly, a massive shark burst from the depths, with its jaws wide open, heading straight for her.
