That evening, Ethan returned to the hospital room with two police officers.
The second she spotted them, Giselle stood up in alarm. "What's going on, Ethan? Have they finished investigating the case?"
Ethan looked fairly calm. "Relax. It's nothing serious. Let's hear what the officers have to say first."
The officers then informed Donovan that, after a thorough investigation, the three men on the island had been confirmed as criminals who had snuck into Haleona from Solmara. They had a record of several armed robberies at sea.
Since all the evidence proved that Donovan had acted in self-defense, he wouldn't be arrested. In other words, he killed the man, but he wouldn't be held legally responsible.
After hearing that, Giselle let out a sigh of relief.
After the officers left, Ethan closed the door and said solemnly, "Don, once your condition has stabilized, it's best if you leave within three days. The sooner you're out of here, the better. Don't stay here any longer than necessary."
Even though the cops were letting Donovan go, the two injured men could still choose to press charges later. If that happened, the cops could come up with another reason to question Donovan again. Once it turned into an international case, things would become more complicated. Hence, the safest plan was to fly home as soon as possible.
Giselle agreed, so on the third day, the two of them boarded a private jet arranged by Ethan and returned to their home country.
…
Initially, Ethan wanted to have Donovan admitted to a hospital after they landed. However, Donovan had had enough of hospital life and the constant smell of antiseptic. He insisted on going home first, saying he would hire a private doctor to come by regularly to treat him there.
Giselle felt a little lightheaded when she set foot into the familiar villa after a year.
