Chapter 19 

After Jacob finished speaking, Lisa was stunned for a moment before 

shaking her head reassuringly. “Don’t blame yourself, Jacob. This wasn’t your fault. 

Even if it hadn’t been Helen, it would’ve been someone else.” 

David’s heart was too vast–it could hold both her and others. His love simply wasn’t pure or pure or enduring enough. 

“I’m glad you don’t resent me. From now on, don’t call me ‘Jacob Johnson.’ Just call me Jacob.” 

He forced a light tone. “I’ve quit law to join your nonprofit work. Consider me your assistant now. 

“You really don’t have to do this. I’m doing just fine,” Lisa gently declined. 

“I know you are. I just want to learn from you and contribute,” Jacob pretended not to catch her refusal. Smiling, he took the textbooks from her hands and continued teaching the children. 

Jacob settled in the village, spending most days helping with construction and tutoring kids. 

His care for Lisa was meticulous always anticipating her needs and wants. 

While carefully maintaining a respectful distance, he showered her with quiet devotion. 

The whole village could see his feelings. 

Even Brenda often urged Lisa to accept him. 

It weighed on her. 

One sunset, Lisa climbed the platform to watch the fading light. 

Jacob appeared silently beside her, offering a peeled apple. 

“Try it. Sweet as can be.” 

“Thanks.” 

She accepted the fruit but didn’t eat, gazing instead at the reddened sky.
