Matt
I was angry.
Angry that we were forced to go on this wild goose chase to ensure that these dragons wouldn’t keep waking up and destroying the world.
It wasn’t like I wanted the world to be destroyed. This was my home-my life. But it still pissed me off.
I’d rather be on the field, playing rugby and winning for my team. This was where I felt most alive.
Or at home with Lia and the rest of the pack We were great together, having built a family somehow.
Michael and Gabi were lucky to be back at the house, but I know they’d rather be here with us. If not for the twins, they would be.
I wouldn’t have let Lia come if she was pregnant.
Then again, I don’t think any of us could’ve stopped her. When she puts her mind to something, she becomes very stubborn and determined.
Grumbling to myself, I glanced over at Colby, who was staring out the window.
The group was back on search. We jumped into our cars and started following the trail, not sure if we were going the right way. Tegan and Lia’s mentor were still searching. I was hoping that they would reach out to us soon to let us know that they had good news.
“This is a child goose chase,” I told Colby, voicing that had been on my mind for a long time. Colby glanced over at me, frowning.
“Yeah, but what choice do we have?”
I shrugged. “We can say fuck it, go home, and wait out the end of the world.”
“And then face potential charges from the witches and wolf association after the dust settles?” Colby asked, rolling his eyes. ” Matt, there is no way I want to deal with any of that, so we’re going to keep searching. “
I sighed. “Rain and Lia’s leads better pan out, Colby. We are going by the seat of our pants here.” “Yeah, but we’ll find them. The coven can’t stay hidden forever,” he pointed out.
Magic could help them stay hidden for a lot longer than anyone wanted to admit. I fucking hated magic. That sentiment was shared with a lot of people in our pack It was something I wanted to say to Lia. She would take it the wrong way.
With her being a licensed witch, whether she found out later in life or not, made things a bit tricky. “Let’s home so,” I muttered in response, not wanting to point out any more of my negative thoughts. There were enough negative thoughts in the air, so I wasn’t going to voice them.
Maybe after things had settled down, I’d finally say some of them out loud.

Rain
After not hearing from Tegan for a few days, I decided it was best if I reached out to her.
I pressed the phone to my ear, pacing my room as the line rang. Tegan picked up almost immediately. “Rain,” she greeted. “Didn’t expect to hear from you so soon. What’s up?”
She was sounding so casual it was driving me insane. I held back a groan, wondering what I should do. No, I’d just keep quiet and let her say what she had to say.
I hesitated. “You said you were looking into the Rosewater coven.”
There was a pause. “Yeah. I tracked them down.” I stopped pacing. “You did?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you say anything?” I snapped, wincing when I realized how angry I sounded. Tegan paused. “Rain, I don’t appreciate you taking that tone with me.”
“Sorry, Tegan,” I apologized. “I’m just really worried about everything that is going on and I thought you were going to call me right away-“
“I was actually going to call you within the hour,” Tegan pointed out. “By the way, do you want to hear where they are hiding or not?”
My face burned from embarrassment. “Shit sorry, Tegan. Go ahead and tell me where you guys found them. “They’re hiding in some desolate town,” she said. “Middle of nowhere, off the grid.”
A chill ran down my spine. “That’s…creepy.”
“Yeah,” she agreed.
I ran a hand through my hair. “Do you think they know we’re looking for them?” “I’d bet on it.”
I sighed, my mood dropping. “I get it. No more jokes. I’ll be ready. Just… don’t let me do anything stupid when we get there.” Tegan’s voice softened, a hint of reassurance in it. “You won’t. Just stick to the plan. We’ll figure this out together.”
“Yeah,” I murmured, “together.” But as I said it, I wondered just how far “together” would stretch.
It was hours later when Tegan showed up. I suspected she used some vampiric magic to make one of those portals she talked about. She looked exhausted.
That kind of magic could take a lot out of her.
But she still showed up to tell me exactly where they found the coven.
I knew why she insisted on telling me in person. Tegan was worried about me and the rest of my pack. Seeing us in person was one way to make sure we were okay.
She was like a mother figure to me. In the short time I knew her, the two of us had forged a bond.
I only had one mother, of course. My mother was fucking amazing but Tegan was a great person. I’m sure her kids were pretty proud to have a mother like her.
Before she left, Tegan hugged me and made sure that all of us promised to be careful. “So when do we go?” I asked, turning to the rest of my pack.
Lia sighed. “In the morning. It’s late out, so I figure out we can leave tomorrow morning. How does that sound?”
A part of me wanted to get this over with right now, but she was right. It was important for us to attempt to get some rest and then face the rest of the day tomorrow.
“Do I have to sleep in the tub again?” I asked, lips forming a pout.
Jesse snorted. “No, we made sure the couch is a pull-out sofa this time, so you’ll have it all to yourself.” “A shame that no one wants to cuddle with me.”
I didn’t mind cuddling with my friends. The four of us were best friends and in the same pack! Why wouldn’t I want to cuddle with them?
Lia was the only one I cuddled with who made me feel those stirrings in my lower body. “Why are you looking at me like that?” Lia asked, blushing.
Matt sighed. “Rain, now is not the time. We have to go track down some witches tomorrow, and that’s going to be bad enough.”
He was right, even if I didn’t want to admit it.
