Brother’s Best Friends Are My Mates novel Chapter 147

Rain

We didn’t stay home for long.

After Lia’s heat was over, we had to go out and try to figure out where this fucking elder dragon was located. It was causing tremors not just in our state but all over the country. Everyone was trying to find this dragon-except for Michael and Gabi. They had the twins to worry about, which we understood.

I know they would be out there with us if they could. If they had their way, they would bring the kids!

I think one of them suggested it but as soon as it came out of Michael’s mouth, Lia gave her brother a look and said that there was no way that he could do that.

This was a clusterfuck.

I love that word and try to use it to describe this type of situation. All of this has been such a well… clusterfuck!

How else do you describe stuck trying to find this elder dragon who was going to be awake any day now! Xaveria kept warning us, and it wasn’t helping my nerves. Every time she opened her mouth, it was another cryptic message about time running out or how the balance was shifting. It made my skin crawl.

I must’ve kept looking at Lia in the car because she sighed, glaring at me. “Rain, stop staring at me. I’m fine.”

“Uh, okay.”

Lia’s eyes narrowed. “Rain, what is that supposed to mean?” “Nothing!” I squeaked out, trying not to annoy her.

She didn’t look convinced. “Liar.”

I huffed, sinking deeper into my seat. “Look, I just think we should all be a little more freaked out than we are.” Lia crossed her arms. “And that’s helpful, how?”

“Misery loves company?” I offered weakly.

She rolled her eyes. “We don’t have time for misery, Rain.”

I groaned, running a hand through my hair. “I’m just saying, maybe a little panic would be normal.” Lia arched a brow. “And maybe keeping it together is what’s keeping us alive.”

I wanted to argue, but she wasn’t exactly wrong. Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling clawing at my ribs.

Colby glanced at us through the rearview mirror. “Would you two quit it? We’ve got bigger problems than Rain’s existential crisis.”

“I’m not having an existential crisis!” I protested. Lia smirked. “Could’ve fooled me.”

Colby sighed. “Rain, just breathe or count to ten or whatever. Lia, stop antagonizing him.” Lia snorted. “I’m not antagonizing him. I’m preparing him for reality.”

I threw my hands up. “Oh great, that makes me feel so much better.”

Colby shot me a dry look “You wanted company in your misery, didn’t you?” Lia smirked. “See? Misery loves company. You should be thanking me.”

I groaned, slumping in my seat. “Yeah, thanks so much. I feel so much better now.”

Colby let out an exasperated sigh. “Both of you, shut up before I start swerving just to make you regret this conversation.” I sat up a little straighter. “You wouldn’t.”

Colby’s fingers twitched on the wheel. “Try me.” Lia snickered. “Rain, I’d stop pushing if I were you.” I scowled. “I didn’t even start pushing anything!”

Colby muttered something under his breath, and I caught the words so much noise before he turned up the radio just loud enough to drown us out.

Lia gave me a satisfied look, crossing her arms. “See? Now look what you did.” I jabbed a finger at her. “You started it!”

She shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. I won.”

I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Instead, I just stared at her in pure disbelief. Colby smirked. “Rain, you’re not gonna win against Lia. Just accept your fate.”

Lia leaned back with a victorious grin. “Smartest thing he’s said all night.”

It was hard to say where we were going to go. We were following Lia’s visions and Xaveria’s directions. She said she could feel the dragon as it started to wake up.

I was terrified that it was going to wake up any minute now. What if it woke up while we were driving directly over it? It would be terrible if it woke up and then ate us.

Do you know how much I didn’t want to become an elder dragon’s dinner? Not to mention how fucking terrifying all of this was.

“What is the elder dragon’s end game here?” I asked after a while, squirming in the passenger seat.

It’s hard to say how long we drove. After awhile I let Colby get behind the wheel. According to Xaveria and Lia, we were getting close to where the elder dragon was sleeping. I wasn’t trying it or was trying not to show it, but the idea of facing this elder dragon was fucking scary.

How were we supposed to kill an elder dragon? Even if Lia was working on harnessing the power from the dragonstones and was getting more powerful by the day, it didn’t make it any easier for us.

It was a fucking dragon. A whole, big dragon with wings, teeth, fangs, and fire breath. I don’t know what was scarier.

We were gathering allies, reaching out to associations to see if they would help.

But the ultimate person to stop this was Lia. Xaveria had made this clear. Lia was going to be the one to save this. She was going to be able to help us all with this power.

Or kill us all depending on how she used it.

The weight of it all sat heavy in my chest, but I couldn’t let that show. Not when everyone was looking at me like I had the answers. Like I knew what the hell we were doing.

I stared out the window, watching the darkened trees blur past, their gnarled branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. The road was rough, bouncing the car just enough to keep me from slipping too far into my own thoughts.

Rain, thankfully, was still quiet. Maybe he picked upon the fact that I was teetering between frustrated and outright panicked. Or maybe he just got bored. Either way, I wasn’t going to question it.

Xaveria believed in her. That should’ve been enough.

It wasn’t.

Because no matter how much faith Xaveria had, no matter how much Lia trained or how powerful she became, we were still walking into a fight against something that shouldn’t even exist.

A dragon. A real, ancient, pissed-off dragon.

And we had no idea if we were actually going to make it out alive. What the fuck were we going to do?

I don’t know how we were going to deal with this. But at least we were together so I suppose this was better than nothing.
