Brother’s Best Friends Are My Mates novel Chapter 150

Lia

Xaveria sighed. “They are stubborn creatures. Well, the elder dragon mostly. The creature thinks of a better time and wants to recreate that. If anything, they won’t end up taking over the world. More likely they will destroy it before destroying themselves.”

So stupid, I thought.

This was what it all came down to.

But it didn’t change the fact that I was going to remain here, determined to do what was best for the ones I love. This was mostly what I was concerned about.

I wasn’t worried about glory or proving myself. I just wanted to make it out of this alive, with everyone I cared about still breathing.

Colby glanced at me as if sensing my thoughts and gave a small nod. We were in this together, no matter what happened next.

The tremors grew stronger, dust trickling from the ceiling. A deep, guttural sound echoed through the tunnels-something ancient stirring awake.

Xaveria exhaled sharply. “Well, looks like we’re out of time.” Colby drew his weapon. “Then let’s finish this.”

With one final look at each other, we stepped forward into the unknown.

The room we were walking into was even darker than the other tunnels we had been in. I cast a light spell, a little ball of light floating in front of us.

Rain made a noise of interest, reaching out to poke it. Before he could, Jesse smacked his hand away. “Ow!” Rain hissed, at least having the decency to shout quietly. “Jesse, that hurt.”

“Good, because you’re being a fucking idiot.”

Rain clutched his hand dramatically. “Excuse me for being curious! What if it was, like, a cool magical light that granted wishes when you touched it?”

Jesse gave him a deadpan look. “It’s just a light, Rain.” Rain huffed. “Well, now we’ll never know, will we?”

Xaveria snorted. “Yeah, because we need more distractions when we’re about to face an elder dragon.”

Colby sighed. “Can we focus? Maybe on the potential death that awaits us instead of whatever Rain’s tiny brain comes up with?”

Rain crossed his arms. “Rude. Also, my brain isn’t tiny. It’s just… selectively intelligent.” I smirked. “So useless.”

Rain gasped, clutching his chest. “Et tu, Lia?”

I shook my head, suppressing a laugh. “If we die down here, it’s going to be because Rain annoyed the dragon into eating us.” Rain scoffed. “Okay, first of all, that is offensive. Second of all, I would never annoy a dragon.”

Colby raised a brow. “You compared it to Jurassic Park like five minutes ago.”

“Yeah, but that was before I realized it might hear me,” Rain said, glancing around nervously. Xaveria rolled her eyes. “Right, because dragons are known for being chill and forgiving.”

“I mean, we could try talking to it,” I suggested. “Maybe it just wants a friend?” Jesse snorted. “Yeah, a friend to roast and eat.”

Rain made a face. “Well, if that’s the case, I volunteer Colby.”

Colby gave him a dry look “You do realize I’m faster than you, right? If anyone’s getting eaten, it’s you.”

“Guys,” Xaveria said, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Can we maybe not argue about who’s going to be eaten first?” Colby shrugged. “I mean, we might as well figure it out now. You know, have a ranking.”

I smirked. “Oh, Rain’s first.”

Jesse gave him a flat look. “Oh my god, Rain-“

“r mean, seriously, do they sleep on piles of gold? Or, like, is there a dragon mattress company? ‘Cause you’d think-“

Lia slapped a hand over his mouth. “I swear, if you get us killed over dragon sleep habits, I will personally haunt you from the afterlife.”

Rain mumbled something behind her hand that was probably rude.

I glanced at Xaveria. “So, how much time do we have before it’s fully awake?” Xaveria hesitated. “Hard to say. Maybe minutes, maybe hours-“

The ground trembled beneath our feet again. A deep, slow rumbling sound echoed through the cavern, almost like… a sigh. Rain froze. “okay. That sounded like a dragon making an ‘I just woke up’ noise.”

Colby unsheathed his weapon. “Then we need to move. Now.”

Rain took a deep breath. “Right. Okay. Cool. No big deal. Just an elder dragon waking up and-OH MY GOD, CAN WE PLEASE GO FASTER?”

Jesse shoved him forward. “Move your ass, dumbass.”

As we hurried through the cavern, the air got heavier, thicker, like the whole place was holding its breath. The dragon wasn’t awake yet.

But it would be.

And we were running out of time.
