Brother’s Best Friends Are My Mates novel Chapter 158

Colby

Life right now was one meeting after another. It wasn’t something any of us wanted to do but what we had to do. It was simply something we needed to accept.

As pack leader, I was used to leading so when Lia asked me to come with her to go meet with a dragon ambassador, I was ready. She hadn’t so much as said the words and I was already on my feet, running towards the door.

When we got to the city hall building, Lia looked tense. She had narrowed eyes and was glaring at the closed doors.

I adjusted my jacket while Lia stood a few feet away, arms crossed, staring off like she could already hear the argument waiting for us on the other side of those doors.

“You look thrilled,” I said.

She let out a short, humorless laugh. “Oh yeah. Can’t wait to walk into another room full of people who don’t trust each other and somehow convince them to work together.”

I wished I had a good sense of humor like Rain. Now I did have a pretty good sense of humor, to an extent, but Rain was the king of jokes. Still, I tried my best to banter with Lia and help make her laugh. She deserved to laugh. If she couldn’t laugh at herself then she was going to drive herself crazy.

“Sounds fun.”

“Colby.” She shot me a look

Chucking, I threw her close and pressed my lips against the top of her head. She leaned against me, mumbling something untowardly about what waited us inside under her breath.

I smirked. “What? I’m just saying, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon. You, me, a dragon ambassador, and a bunch of people who’d rather be throwing punches than shaking hands.”

“Don’t remind me.” She pinched the bridge of her nose. “I swear, if this turns into another screaming match-” “It will.”

She groaned. “You’re supposed to be the optimistic one.” I shrugged. “I’m optimistic we’ll make it out alive.”

Lia sighed, shaking her head. “At least one of us is in a good mood.”

“Well, if I start acting like you, we’re doomed.”

She smirked at that, just a little. “You’re impossible.”

“And yet, here I am, your charming and capable partner in this nightmare.” “Charming is debatable.”

“Wow. Harsh. And here I was, mentally preparing to throw myself in front of you if things get violent in there.” She raised a brow. “You’d take a hit for me?”

I placed a hand over my heart. “Without hesitation. If it’s not a magical blast, a blade, or anything that leaves a scar. I have standards.”

Lia snorted. “Coward.”

“Realist,” I corrected. Then, nodding toward the doors, I added, “Shall we?” She exhaled slowly, rolling her shoulders back. “Let’s get this over with.” “That’s the spirit.”

I pulled the door open for her with a dramatic flourish. “After you, fearless leader.”

She rolled her eyes but stepped forward.

As I followed, I muttered under my breath, “This is gonna be a disaster, isn’t it?” “Absolutely,” Lia whispered back.

“Cool, cool. Just making sure we’re on the same page.” And just like that, we walked into the fire.

Inside, the arguing was already in full swing. A dragon ambassador stood in the middle, gesturing wildly as another council member waved a stack of papers in the air. “You see, this is the problem,” the ambassador was saying, “We can’t just sweep centuries of distrust under the rug and pretend it’s fine!”

“Of course, it’s not fine!” one of the council members shot back, their voice high-pitched and desperate. “But throwing accusations around isn’t going to solve anything.”

I gave Lia a sidelong glance. “Told you.”

She shot me a look that said shut up without needing to say a word.

“Alright,” I said, stepping forward and clapping my hands together. “Everyone, calm down. Let’s just take a deep breath and-

Fate was always fucking around in our lives, trying to fuck us over. I wished it could just leave us alone and it finally seemed to be stepping away from us. Unless it had something else up its sleeve which was terrifying enough.

“I suppose you are right.”

I smirked. “You suppose I am right? I am right. Besides, I don’t mind helping our community. All the guys are doing their part. Hell the whole pack is doing their part.”

Lia sighed. “Rain said he was thinking about getting a coaching job like Michael.”

“And that seems like a good idea for him. I think Jesse is going to be helping us out with the days to days of working at the city council.”

She smiled softly. “And what about Matt?”

“He is gonna be working as an assistant coach on the actual team we used to be on. So, in a way, some of us still are staying in the rugby world. It’s nothing you need to be sorry over.”

Was this how I thought my life was going to work out? No, but I fine with that to be honest. Working in the political landscape was interesting. It was giving me a challenge, something I was looking forward to.

“Ready to head home?” I asked Lia, giving her a smile.

Slowly, Lia nodded. “Yes, I think so. I’ll try to sleep on the way if I can.” “If you can’t sleep in the car sleep when we get home so don’t worry, Lia.”

It was going to be a difficult transition for Lia. I know it was going to be but this was something we were all prepared to help her with, even Rain, who thought politics was the most annoying thing to ever be created.

Michael had the twins so he was going to do what he could. So was Gabi, Simone, and her two mates. Everyone was doing their part.

I started the car, feeling exhaustion washing over me. It had been a long day and the day was just going to get a hell of a lot longer come tomorrow. We had to work side by side with this ambassador, especially Lia. She was the shining star, the one who managed to save the world!

It wasn’t something a lot of people knew-just the higher ups were aware of what happened with the dragons and how close the elder dragon came to destroying absolutely everything.

I was more than aware, but then again I had been there so if 1 wasn’t aware of it, it would’ve been a huge problem.
