Brother’s Best Friends Are My Mates novel Chapter 160

Lia

When life was starting to get less complicated, life threw a curveball. I show up to this welcoming party trying to help introduce dragons to the neighborhood. Everything is going fine. They are talking to everyone and trying to do their best to integrate into society.

But then things started to get complicated. It started with one person showing up with a sign and then someone else showing up with another.

There were fucking protestors here. Actual protestors.

It was hard to believe that these people had made these signs and then drove all the way out here. They were walking around with these stupid signs that had stupid phrases, saying that dragons shouldn’t be allowed in our neighborhood let alone our city after what they did.

I pinched the bridge of my nose, unable to believe this was happening.

Then, just to be sure, I pinched my cheek. It hurt, causing me to cry out in pain.

Yes, this was real. I was really seeing this right now and no amount of denial was going to change this.

Beside me, Simone looked just as shocked as I was. We shared a look, both of us shaking our heads in disbelief.

Why did these idiots have to show up here at a time like this? It was supposed to be a day where we tried to get along and forge ahead with a future that involved everyone getting together.

But no, these idiots wanted to make everything difficult for not only me but also the dragon shifters. I stared at the protestors, barely resisting the urge to groan. “You have got to be kidding me.”

Simone stood beside me, arms crossed, eyes narrowed. “I wish I were. But nope, here we are, wasting time while they wave their ridiculous signs and scream about ‘the end of humanity.”‘

I scoffed. “Oh yeah, because nothing says, ‘rational argument’ like chanting nonsense outside a diplomatic meeting.” Simone nudged me. “Checkout the guy in the front. He spelled ‘tyranny’ wrong.”

I blinked, looking closer. “Tyranny is upon us!” the sign read. I let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “Oh, for-how do you come to a protest and not even spell-check your propaganda?”

“Not their strongest trait,” Simone said dryly.

I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. “We’re trying to stop wars, and they’re treating this like some kind of reality show. Do they want another bloodbath? Do they want the dragons to decide we’re not worth the effort and just torch everything?”

Simone smirked. “Wouldn’t blame them if they did. Honestly, if I were a dragon, I’d be questioning if this whole reintegration thing was worth it.”

“Don’t say that” I muttered. “The council is already one insult away from imploding.” Simone let out a dramatic sigh. “Fine, fine. But you have to let me punch at least one of them.” I gave her a look. “We can’t just go around punching people.”

“You can’t. I, on the other hand, have fewer moral restrictions.”

I snorted. “You have the same restrictions.”

“That’s up for debate.” She tilted her head toward the protestors. “Come on, just one good hit. Right in the smug face of-” “Simone.”

She sighed. “Okay, no punching. But if one of them throws the first hit, I’m not holding back” I crossed my arms. 11If they throw the first hit, I’m right there with you.”

Simone grinned. “Now that’s the spirit.”

I shook my head, fighting a smirk. “We are terrible diplomats.”

“Hey, we’re still standing here, listening to this nonsense instead of storming out there and causing chaos. I’d say that shows remarkable restraint.”

I exhaled slowly. “Yeah, restraint. Let’s see how long that lasts.”

“How long do you think until one of them starts shouting something about dragons eating us all? Two minutes? Three?” “At this rate, they’ll start offering to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. You know, ‘I volunteer as tribute’ style.” Simone snickered. “I mean, if they’re offering.”

I narrowed my eyes. “I’m just saying, if I hear one more ‘burn them all’ chant, I might lose it.” She glanced at me with a mischievous grin. “Careful. They might think you’re one of them.”

“Great. First, they misspell words; now they’re making me look like one of them. You sure we can’t just have a little fun?” Simone raised an eyebrow. “Define ‘fun.”‘

I paused. “I’m starting to wonder if a water balloon fight would break the tension.” “Now we’re talking. But only if we get to hit the guy with the ‘tyranny’ sign first.” “Deal.”

“Yes, I know he did, but it’s okay. I’m okay.” “It’s not okay.”

I sighed. “Yes, but I mean I am okay, so no harm done.” “I’m going to kill him.”

I scowled. “Do that and you’ll see how an omega can shut out an alpha.”

Jesse stilled. He slowly turned towards me, narrowing his eyes, but I could see the anger fading. He sighed softly, slowly calming down.

“Fuck, fine. But if he tries anything else, I will kill him. Understand?”

“No, you understand me, Jesse,” I warned. “This is not something I want to screw up. We are trying to do something right now to help the dragons. All of us have to do our part, and this is my part. Your part is not killing anyone.”

Jesse was pissed off. Anyone could see that, but I could see that he was willing to put some stock in my words. Sighing with relief, I was happy that he eventually went back to what he was doing.

I looked over at Simone with a shake of my head. “That was close!”

Simone winced and then grinned, “I can’t believe that you were able to talk him down. How do you do that? It’s like you have the magic touch.”

“I don’t know, Simone. It’s a weird gift that I have. Are you jealous or something?”

“No, I’m not jealous. But I am in awe. Let me get on my knees and start worshiping you.” Snorting, I gave her a look.

“Simone kept making me laugh. I am grateful I can still laugh even in these tense situations.” The two of us went back to what we were doing.
