Hu Yan’s heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was shaking his whole chest. He had been staring at the cave wall with all the willpower he had... until that soft voice finally came from behind him.
"Hu Yan... I’m done. You can look. You can take the wooden tub out."
A shiver went straight down his spine.
He didn’t even breathe as he turned.
"Yes...yes," he blurted automatically.
And then he froze.
Su Qinglan stood there wrapped in the simple, thin, strange hide she always used after bathing. The fabric clung to her damp skin, outlining every soft curve. Her hair, dripping wet, slid down her bare shoulder. Water glistened there, trailing slowly down her collarbone and disappearing into the towel wrapped around her.
Hu Yan swallowed hard. His entire face flushed red in an instant.
He couldn’t stop staring.
Su Qinglan noticed. Her cheeks flamed. She gave him a quick, flustered glance over her shoulder.
"What are you looking at?" she whispered, voice trembling just a little.
But she didn’t hide. She only gathered the towel tighter around herself and walked deeper into the cave to pick up her clothes.
Stop looking... stop looking... Okay, maybe one more look... NO! Hu Yan! Behave!
He peeked anyway.
Aah! Why is it hugging her like that? Evil towel. Shameless towel! It should be him, hugging her like that.
He felt heat shoot straight up to his ears.
She’s just... walking. Why does that make my whole body vibrate?
Hu Yan almost forgot how to move until he snapped back to himself.
"Yes! I’ll take it out... I’ll take it out now!" he said in a rush.
He grabbed the tub, ran out to throw the water, and practically sprinted back inside.
When he came in, she was still wrapped in that same towel, sitting on a stone bed and drying her hair. Droplets slid down her arms and onto her thighs. The towel rode up just a bit as she lifted her arms.
Hu Yan’s breath caught.
He moved before he even thought about it.
He stepped behind her. "Lan Lan~..Let me help you," he said softly.
Su Qinglan didn’t refuse. "Okay."
It wasn’t the first time he’d dried her hair. She trusted him.
He took the cloth from her hands and began gently rubbing her hair, careful, slow movements. She leaned forward slightly, choosing between two pieces of clothing laid out in front of her.
Warm and fragrant.
He could smell the faint sweetness of her skin. Water dripped down her back, and the towel slipped just a little.
His hands slowed.
She shifted to pick up another clothes, and the towel slipped even lower.
Hu Yan’s breath hitched. He froze completely.
Su Qinglan straightened, the towel barely holding on, and he felt all the blood in his body rush to a certain part of his body.
He didn’t mean to.
He couldn’t help it.
