Exhausted from the torrent of emotion and the lack of sleep, Lin Muyu’s body went completely limp in his arms. She had finally fallen asleep.
Wang Mo slowly adjusted their position. He sat down carefully on the ground, leaning his back against a thick tree trunk.
He pulled her fully onto his lap, positioning her head comfortably against his chest. Her small, relaxed body felt feather-light against his own powerful frame.
He looked down at her peaceful, sleeping face, committing every detail to memory.
He wanted to cherish this time. This quiet, stolen moment where she was utterly vulnerable and intimately close to him. He knew this fragile peace would not last.
When she woke up, she would be back to the reserved, cold female. The wall would go up again.
She was terrified that if she mated with another man and he died too, she would completely lose herself in the bottomless, terrifying abyss of grief. She was afraid of loving and losing again.
Wang Mo held her tight, his hand resting protectively on her back. He vowed silently to himself that he would never leave her side again. He would protect her, even if she never loved him back. He would wait.
He closed his eyes, inhaling the scent of her hair, and allowed himself this brief, bittersweet moment of false hope.
Su Qinglan was still sitting with the other females when the sun climbed higher and higher. If they stayed any longer, all their delicate skin would definitely burn.
Just then, heavy footsteps echoed from behind.
Hu Yan finally returned.
The moment the females saw him, they burst into teasing smiles.
"Warrior Hu Yan! You are going to have two cubs!" Da Ya called out with a wide grin. "Su Qinglan’s female just felt the cubs kicking her!"
Hu Yan froze mid-stride. His golden eyes widened. He looked from the other females to Su Qinglan. Her face was flushed with happiness, and she was smiling brightly.
He moved quickly to her side.
"Two cubs?" he whispered, his voice full of disbelief and profound joy.
Su Qinglan nodded, her eyes shining. "Yes, yes, two."
Another waved her hand dramatically. "Quick, quick, let him touch the belly! Maybe the Cubs will kick again!"
Su Qinglan covered her face, feeling her cheeks heat up. Why must these females be like this? But at that exact moment, the cubs inside her gave a strong kick.
thump ...
Her eyes widened. "Again! They kicked again!"
Hu Yan froze. His whole giant body stiffened like a stone.
"You... you... the cubs... kicked?" His voice cracked a little. This mighty warrior looked like a stupid big puppy suddenly.
Su Qinglan nodded.
The next second, Hu Yan looked like he was about to cry, laugh, and collapse all at the same time.
"Why... why wasn’t I here? It’s the first time they kicked! I should’ve... I should’ve been... argh!"
He scratched his head so hard it looked like he was going to peel his own fur off. Even the females laughed loudly.
"Go, go! Take your female back! Don’t burn her!" someone said while pushing his arm.
Hu Yan didn’t need to be told twice. He immediately scooped Su Qinglan up like a treasure someone might steal from him.
"I’m carrying you. The sun is too strong."
"Hu Yan, I can walk."
"No. What if the cubs kick and you fall? Impossible. Not allowed."
He practically ran back to the cave.
Inside, he sat down with her on his lap and stared at her belly like it was the most mysterious treasure in the world.
"Kick," he whispered.
The cave was silent.
He leaned closer. "Cubs... kick for father."
Still nothing.
He poked lightly. "Little ones? It’s me, Hu Yan, your father. Kick?"
Su Qinglan teased him. "They’re probably tired. Unlike you, they don’t want to work the whole day."
Hu Yan gasped. "Qinglan, I worked very hard today!"
She patted his cheek. "Yes, yes, the hardest worker. Now stop staring before you scare them."
Hu Yan sighed dramatically, like the whole world was unfair to him. But then he suddenly stood up.
"You didn’t take your bath this morning," he stated, his eyes full of concern. "I will bring more water. You like to bathe every day. You should feel fresh."
