“Mrs. Salisbury, your IVF was a success. Right now, both you and the babies are perfectly healthy.”
Wiona sat in the doctor’s office, gripping her ultrasound printout. For the first time in weeks, she let herself smile, relief softening her features.
“That’s wonderful. All the pain, all those shots… it was worth it to try a second time.”
She remembered that first failed round. She’d been so scared to let Jace down, she didn’t even tell him. She just came back to the hospital, desperate to try again. Thank God, this time it worked.
Just as she got up to leave, something tugged at her memory. “Dr. Cano, please don’t tell my husband about the first failed round. I don’t want him worrying over something that’s already in the past.”
She thought back to the day she learned her fallopian tubes were blocked. It had felt like her whole world collapsed, but Jace just took her hand and said, “It's okay. Medicine is amazing now. We can try IVF. I’ll be right beside you.”
Even the doctor had commented, “Mr. Salisbury is such a caring husband.”
Now, after two rounds of IVF, Wiona believed it was all worth it. As long as she could bring these babies into the world, keep her marriage together, and protect their little family, she wouldn’t complain.
Leaving the hospital, Wiona headed straight to Salisbury Corporation. She couldn’t wait to give Jace the good news. It’s lunchtime, so the halls were empty and quiet.
The door to Jace’s office was slightly open. Wiona was about to knock when she heard a familiar voice from inside, teasing and a little mean.
“Jace, this move of yours is wild. Making your wife carry a baby for Kellen. If she ever finds out the kids in her belly are yours and Kellen’s, she’ll absolutely lose it.”
Wiona froze. It was Neil, Jace’s childhood friend. Did she hear that right?
Jace’s laugh was cold and careless. “Lose it? What right does she have to lose it? If she hadn’t pulled all those tricks to drive Kellen away years ago, Kellen would never leave me and move to another country. This is what she owes me and Kellen. Being able to have a child for us should be an honor for her.”
Wiona stood there, stunned, every word hitting her like a slap. She went pale and instinctively placed her hand over her stomach. Was this really happening?
Neil spoke again. “But she’s been through so much these last six months…”
Jace’s tone was even colder. “Kellen’s health isn’t good, and she’s terrified of pain. I couldn’t let Kellen go through pregnancy. Besides, hasn’t Wiona always wanted to give me children? These are my kids too.”
Neil let out a low whistle. “You’re ruthless.”
“Don’t worry. Once she delivers, I’ll give her a chunk of money as compensation.”
“What if…”
