“Your first round of IVF failed because Mr. Salisbury’s sperm quality was poor, and there were also issues with the egg he brought in. When you returned for your second attempt, we retrieved a new egg from you, which you’re already aware of.

“So we used your own egg, but during the procedure, the nurse accidentally used the wrong sperm sample again…”

“That means the baby you’re carrying is biologically yours, but not your husband’s.”

Wiona felt a cold chill spread through her body. Every bit of color drained from her face.

In just a few hours, her whole world had flipped upside down. One minute, she thought she was nothing more than a vessel for her husband and his first love. The next, she was told their embryo had failed and that the baby growing inside her was actually hers and a stranger’s.

Was this some kind of sick joke?

She pressed her hand over her still-flat stomach. Jace’s face appeared in her mind—sometimes gentle, telling her, “Don’t worry, I’m here,” other times cold and distant, saying, “It’s an honor for her to carry my child with Kellen.”

Those two sides of him blurred together, making her stomach twist with nausea.

Wiona didn’t cry anymore. Instead, she wiped her face with the back of her hand, her eyes turning icy cold.

Dr. Cano and the nurse stood in silence, too scared to face her.

Wiona walked right up to Dr. Cano. “Dr. Cano, what happened today stays between the three of us. No one else can ever find out.”

“Mrs. Salisbury, we…” Dr. Cano tried to say something, but she cut him off with a look.

“I’m not going to press charges for your mistake. Not now. But if this ever gets out, I’ll sue this hospital into the ground. And you, Dr. Cano, will lose your license and never work in medicine again.”

She turned to the nurse. “As for you, covering up a mistake like this is enough to send you to jail. Do you want to risk that?”

Dr. Cano’s legs buckled. The nurse looked like she was about to cry again. “Mrs. Salisbury, we promise. We won’t tell a soul.”

Dr. Cano nodded quickly, his voice filled with desperation.

Wiona didn’t bother to look at them again.

The only thing she could be grateful for was that the baby was hers. Not Jace and Kellen’s. She wasn’t carrying someone else’s love child; this baby belonged only to her.

As for the Sullivan family, as long as she kept this secret, no one would ever know the truth.

She took a deep breath and walked out of the office.

She needed a divorce. There was no way she could stay with the Salisburys for another second. She was done with Jace and all his lies. Just looking at him made her feel sick.

This baby, though, she would keep. She’d raise her child on her own.

From now on, she’d live for herself and her baby.

Wiona dragged her tired body through the front door. The lights flickered on, revealing the empty, echoing house.

What she used to think of as her safe place now felt more like a cage Jace had built just for her.
