Jace moved faster than her. He stepped right in front of her, blocking her way.
"Wiona!"
"Wiona... please, don’t be scared. This is my fault."
"I was wrong. I swear, I won’t hurt you again."
He dropped to one knee, reaching out with shaky hands to gently brush her cold, thin cheek.
Wiona’s whole body tensed. Fear filled her eyes, like she’d just remembered something truly awful. Seeing her like that, so terrified of him, hit Jace harder than he expected.
Was she really that afraid of him? When did everything start to fall apart? They used to be able to at least live together in peace. Now they were barely even that.
"Wiona, believe it or not, even if I don’t love you the way you want, I still see you as my wife." His voice cracked. He stood up and pulled her into his arms with a gentleness that surprised even him.
"I just... I hated that you were hiding from me. I hated that you weren’t the same sweet, understanding person I thought I knew. That’s why I lost my temper."
"I know you’ve been through a lot."
"But we can still have a baby. Our own baby."
He pressed his forehead to hers, searching her eyes, desperate to make her believe him. He felt guilty, really guilty this time. Once everything calmed down, he’d talk to Kellen, and he’d make sure Wiona had a child who was truly hers. Maybe it would make up for everything.
But as soon as he said it, Wiona’s face twisted in disgust.
A baby with him? She would never want that.
She shoved him away, hard, her fear and pain flashing across her face again.
