Wiona Morgan.
That name again.
She kept showing up in Conrad’s life lately, each time more unexpected than the last. It left him stunned, thrown off, and honestly, a little freaked out by all the strange coincidences. He needed almost a full minute just to wrap his head around it.
“Is there any chance the list is wrong?”
Korey shook his head. “No way. The hackers would bet their entire reputation on it. They signed off on this list, swore to take full responsibility.”
Conrad opened a drawer and pulled out a cigarette. The sharp sound of his lighter echoed in the room.
Korey watched, surprised. How long had it been since Mr. Sullivan last smoked? Because of his little sister, he’d basically quit. He used to light up here and there, but once she got fascinated by fire, he’d stopped completely. Korey hadn’t seen him touch a cigarette in almost a year.
Whatever was going on, it was really getting to him.
Conrad took a couple of drags, then asked, “Why did she need IVF?”
“Is something wrong with Jace?”
Korey nearly choked on his own spit. He coughed, glancing up to find Mr. Sullivan watching him. That look sent a chill down Korey’s spine. “Uh, if you want, I can get the hackers to pull her medical files.”
Conrad shook his head. “Forget it.”
Maybe it was just another weird coincidence. For a second, he almost wondered if someone had set this up on purpose, like some elaborate scheme aimed at him. But then he thought of Wiona’s clear, honest eyes, and he let the idea go.
She was W. The woman who could paint those pictures wouldn’t play games like that.
Conrad took a final, deep drag, then crushed the cigarette in the ashtray.
“Start investigating.”
Just two words, but as Conrad pressed the cigarette out, Korey caught a subtle tremor in his hand.
Korey frowned. Whenever Ms. Morgan was involved, Mr. Sullivan seemed to lose his usual calm. That was worrying. If she were just W, the artist, Korey would be happy for him. But she was more than that—she was also the young Mrs. Salisbury, part of another powerful family in Stonehill.
