“On it,” Mason replied.
Wiona could only guess at what was really going on. If Daniel actually had an illegitimate child somewhere, then Jace would already know. That was the only way to explain why he’d looked so angry and humiliated when he realized he might lose his inheritance.
When she climbed into the car, Wiona was surprised to see Jace sitting there.
“You’re still here?” she asked, raising a brow. Shouldn’t he be desperate to find Kellen and explain himself by now? Why was he still hanging around?
Her tone was sharp, and Jace felt a strange sense of déjà vu. That attitude… this was the real her. Just a minute ago, in front of his dad, she’d been all smiles and sweetness. Now the mask was gone.
A prickly, restless anger bubbled up in him. He turned and boxed her in with his arms, trapping her against the door.
“Wiona, what are you even talking about?” he said, trying to sound gentle, but his voice was tight. “I told you, from now on I’ll be a proper husband. Why would I just leave you and go? And anyway, what did Dad say to you just now?”
So that was what he wanted. He was fishing for information.
Wiona looked him straight in the eye. She could see the frustration burning behind his carefully controlled expression. She smiled suddenly, bright and a little mocking.
“He told me to do my best as the Salisbury daughter-in-law, and that he’d treat me well. He also said the entire Salisbury family would be handed over to me one day. Jace, what do you think he meant by that?”
Jace was floored. Dad really said that? So he was serious about supporting Wiona. He was even giving her more than Bianca ever got.
Jace’s thoughts spun. This was going to make winning Kellen back even harder. He pictured Kellen’s face after the confrontation earlier, and his chest tightened with regret and anxiety.
He didn’t feel like playing these games with Wiona anymore. He leaned back and waved her out of the car.
“I’ve got something to do. You can take a taxi back to the estate.”
Wiona didn’t move. Instead, she slowly pulled out her phone. “Alright then, I’ll just call Dad and see if the company has a car available to give me a ride…”
Jace grabbed her hand before she could dial.
