“Oh, what did you just say?” Wiona’s tone was calm, almost bored. “Ever since that three-day fever, not only is my throat ruined, my hearing’s kind of shot too. I didn’t catch that.”

Jace was silent, but she could practically hear him grinding his teeth in frustration. There was always this anger between them, stuck somewhere in the middle, never quite fading, never really showing its face.

“Wiona, are you doing this on purpose?”

She didn’t even hesitate. “Yeah, I am. Tell me, Jace, what gives you the right to question me or yell at me? Yesterday you stood in front of everyone, making this big speech about being a changed man, swearing you’d be a good husband. How long did that last? Couldn’t even keep up the act for a day, could you? If you hadn’t stayed out all night yourself, you would’ve realized sooner that I wasn’t home.”

She took a breath, her words like sharp little stones. “You really think I’m the kind of woman who’ll just sit around, crying and waiting for her cheating husband to come back? You need to get over yourself.”
