A cold shiver swept over Wiona. Right then, everything clicked into place. Daniel’s sudden change had nothing to do with her and everything to do with the Morgan family. Instead of feeling relieved, she was just... tired. No matter how hard she tried, she was always someone’s bargaining chip.
“Okay, I get it,” she said quietly.
She hung up and just stood there on the sidewalk, feeling lost. That’s when a lady, dressed to the nines, bumped right into her.
“Sorry!” The lady barely slowed down, tossing the word over her shoulder as she hurried off. Wiona noticed how anxious she looked, but since she hadn’t hurt her, she just shrugged it off.
She was about to lock her car when two men in black suits crept out from behind the parking garage. They were scanning the area, clearly searching for someone. Wiona immediately thought of the woman from a minute ago and guessed these guys were after her. She didn’t want any part of whatever was going on, so she slipped away from the garage and kept moving.
She made it to the elevator and was about to press her floor when someone darted in.
“Wait, please, hold the door...”
Wiona glanced over and saw it was the same lady from before. Recognition flashed between them.
“Oh, it’s you,” she said, catching her breath. “I’m really sorry about earlier. I was in such a rush. That was rude.”
Wiona was used to people staring at her, but this woman was just as striking. It wasn’t only the high-end clothes. Her skin was flawless, and she had the kind of effortless elegance you couldn’t fake. Even Wiona found herself glancing twice.
“It’s fine,” Wiona said with a small nod. They both pressed the button for the third floor.
The second the elevator doors slid open, the lady’s face changed. The two men in black were right there, coming down the hallway. They’d tracked her upstairs. The woman looked desperately toward the elevator, but it was already gone. The men started heading their way.
Wiona was about to walk away when the woman suddenly grabbed her arm.
“Please, can you help me?” she whispered quickly. “Those men are following me. Please, just help me shake them.”
Wiona hesitated. She wanted to say no. She really didn’t need extra trouble in her life. But when she looked into the woman’s pleading, watery eyes, she just couldn’t turn her down.
“Come with me,” she said, pulling the woman along. She walked straight up to a staff member. “Excuse me, can you tell us where room 318 is?”
The hostess smiled and led them down the hall. They kept up a brisk pace, and behind them, everything was quiet.
