Jace froze, his arms tightening around Wiona as if she might shatter. He stared at her, wide-eyed, fear flickering across his face alongside something darker. When he finally spoke, his voice was barely more than a whisper, shaky and uncertain. “What are you talking about?”
Watching his nerves unravel, Wiona bit back a bitter laugh. So even Jace could be scared. But what exactly was he afraid of? That she’d figured out his scheme with Kellen, how they’d used her to have a child? That she’d stop being their compliant pawn, risking everything to protect their secret? Or maybe he was terrified the truth about who he really was would finally come out and everyone would see just how twisted and cruel he could be.
She clenched her fists, fighting the urge to scream. Instead, her voice came out cold and sharp. “You forced me to take something to end the pregnancy. Do you honestly think you deserve to be their father?”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Jace visibly relaxed. He thought she was still in the dark. He had no idea how much she really knew.
Back in the main hall, he set her gently on the sofa. He knelt on the rug and reached out, his hand hovering over her belly. Wiona shoved him away, her glare hard as stone.
“What are you doing?” she snapped, her entire body on edge.
Jace just smiled, almost relieved. Her protectiveness reassured him that the babies must be fine. He liked seeing her act like a mother. In his mind, she really was the perfect surrogate. The twins growing inside her belonged to him and Kellen, but Wiona didn’t know the truth. She was guarding them with her life, and that made him feel smugly satisfied.
“I just want to feel the babies,” he said softly. “Are they okay?”
She stared him down, her tone icy. “You really don’t know? If anything happens to them because of what you did, Jace, I swear you’ll pay for it. With your life.”
Her words hit hard, her gaze burning right through him. For a moment, he looked shaken.
“Wiona, can’t we just talk for once? Why are we always fighting? Is it because of Kellen? Is that really why you hate me?”
