Daniel wanted her to know her place. Wiona never expected her father-in-law to be so strict about something so petty, but she refused to be anyone’s puppet. No way was she going to set foot in a room Kellen had stayed in, touch anything Kellen had touched, or ever get close to a man as stained as Jace.
She glanced at George, the butler, and instead of arguing, she said calmly, “I think I’ll move into the guesthouse with Grandma. Maybe she’ll get better faster if I’m with her.”
Without waiting for a response, Wiona headed straight for the guesthouse. George watched her go, completely taken aback. Why couldn’t she just follow instructions for once? He hurried off to report to Daniel.
When Daniel heard this, his brow tightened in annoyance. Clearly, this daughter-in-law was nothing like he imagined. She’s defiant with the Morgan family, and now she was openly challenging him, too. Where did she get the nerve?
Still, now that Wiona was back, she wasn’t leaving the Salisbury family again. If she behaved, did her duty as a Salisbury, he’d see to it she got the respect and status she deserved, and the Morgans would treat her better too. He couldn’t let her jeopardize the fragile peace between the families. But if she kept making trouble, he’d just have to wait until she gave him a couple of grandkids before showing her how ruthless he could be.
He picked up his phone and called Jace. “You have three days. If you can’t fix things with your wife, you’re going to the construction site out by the city limits. And as for Kellen, she’ll disappear from Stonehill, just like that. This is your last chance, Jace.”
Wiona settled easily into the guesthouse. She didn’t move back into the main house, but at least she stayed on the estate, and her grandmother was thrilled. The old lady’s spirits lifted so much, she even ate more than usual.
Jean, the housekeeper, smiled at her. “If only you and Mr. Salisbury could get along, I’m sure the old lady would be even happier.”
Grandma Grace looked at Wiona, her eyes full of hope. “Wiona, you wouldn’t let me go to your grave with regrets, would you? I just want to see you and Jace happy together, at least while I’m still here. This family can’t handle any more drama.”
Wiona let out a helpless sigh. “I’ll try my best, Grandma.”
