The next morning, Wiona came downstairs and spotted Jace already sitting at the dining table in the villa. Her grandma was waiting there too, smiling at her like she knew exactly what was going on. Wiona had no choice but to sit down.

Jace was quick to pour her a glass of milk. “Babe, what do you want for breakfast?”

The table was packed with every breakfast food imaginable, so many options that Wiona felt a little overwhelmed just looking at them.

“I don’t…” She started to refuse, but Grandma Grace gave her the kind of look that made it clear there would be consequences if she kept going. Wiona swallowed her words and forced herself to say, “Pancakes.”

Grandma Grace was still watching her closely, so Wiona threw in a stiff, “Thank you.”

Jace picked out some pancakes, and set the plate in front of her. “It’s the least I can do,” he said, his voice soft. “ I just hope you and the babies are healthy.”

He looked so gentle and caring, but all Wiona could think was, What’s he up to this time? There was no way she could stand another day in the Salisbury family’s old house.

She forced herself to finish two pancakes, then completely lost her appetite. Pushing her chair back, she walked over to Grandma Grace, gently taking the handles of her wheelchair. “Grandma, want to go for a walk?”

Grandma Grace hadn’t been outside in days. She grabbed both Wiona’s and Jace’s hands and put them together. “Good, you both can keep me company.”

Wiona didn’t pull away, and Jace’s mood seemed to lift just from that small gesture. He looked down at Wiona, who was so quiet and calm, and his own restlessness started to fade.

The three of them walked slowly through the garden. Jace was perfectly polite and attentive, at least until his phone rang. As soon as he answered, his whole vibe changed.

Grandma Grace reached over and grabbed the phone from his hand. “Today, you’re only allowed to spend time with me and Wiona. Nothing else. No distractions.” She handed the phone off to Jean. “Take that away.”

Jace looked totally defeated. “Grandma, it’s just work stuff. You know the company just went public. There’s a lot to handle right now. The stock market’s still shaky. Please, just give me a little time to sort it out.”

But Grandma Grace wasn’t having it.

That’s when Wiona jumped in. “Grandma, I’ll walk with you for a bit. Let’s just give him ten minutes. If he’s not back by then, we’ll ignore him the whole rest of the day. Okay?”

Grandma Grace was clearly pleased Wiona was sticking up for Jace, so she caved and had Jean give the phone back to him.

Jace threw Wiona a grateful glance, his eyes lingering on her, then hurried off to the other side of the garden.
