“You’ve been selling off Grandma Grace’s things behind her back, haven’t you?” Wiona said, her voice steady. “Including that tiger painting you just sold for eight hundred thousand.”
Dr. Monroe’s face went pale. He hadn’t expected Wiona to know this much. Panic flickered across his features, impossible to hide.
“Mrs. Salisbury, why are you doing this?” he stammered. “Can’t you just let it go? I’ve never actually wronged you. If you think I overcharged you that one time, I can return some of the money. Why set me up like this? We see each other all the time. Do you really think life will be easier for you in the Salisbury family after this?”
Wiona didn’t flinch. She just stared at him, eyes cold. Then she spoke, calm and sharp. “I just want to know how you got the painting. If you’re honest with me, I can pretend none of this ever happened. You live your life, and I’ll live mine.”
Dr. Monroe looked lost. Was she really willing to let it go, after digging up so much dirt on him?
Noticing his hesitation, Wiona’s voice grew firmer. “You don’t have any other options. Either tell the truth and hope for the best, or we can let the police handle it.”
That broke him. Dr. Monroe caved instantly. “Alright, alright, I’ll tell you everything. The painting… I did steal it from Grace.”
Wiona waited, silent, letting him unravel on his own.
He squeezed his eyes shut and went on. “Yes, I lost twenty million gambling at Seabrook Bay. Even if I sold everything I owned, I couldn’t pay it back. So I started looking for a way out… My mother, Jean, works for Grace. She’s been with her for years, saved up a bit. Thanks to her, I got the job as the family’s doctor. My salary is good—over a million a year—but it’s nothing compared to what I owe. It was never enough.”
“I had to ask my mother for help. She couldn’t just watch me get destroyed. Those loan sharks threatened to cut off my arm, to ruin me completely. I was barely surviving, paying huge interest every month. So sometimes, my mother would steal something valuable from Grace and give it to me to sell. It wasn’t much, but it helped.”
“A few days ago, Grace decided she wanted to burn that tiger painting. My mother knew how valuable it was—why else would it be locked in a safe? So she swapped it for a fake and gave me the real one. I sold it right away. Someone offered eight hundred thousand on the spot.”
“But before I could even spend the money, you found me out. I thought maybe Grace had told you, that you came back after hearing about the painting. I never imagined you’d already set a trap and were just waiting for me to fall into it…”
Regret washed over Dr. Monroe. He hated himself for going after Wiona so recklessly, for underestimating her. He never saw this coming.
Wiona nodded to Mason, who quickly gagged Dr. Monroe.
