Marian smacked her thigh and hurried downstairs, ready to shout at the top of her lungs. But just as she opened her mouth, she spotted Wiona sitting in the dining room, calm as ever, sipping her afternoon tea like nothing in the world could bother her.
Marian felt her soul slowly settle back into her body. Good grief, this job was going to be the death of her.
Evening crept up before anyone realized.
George came over with the phone. “Mrs. Salisbury, your husband wants to speak with you.”
Wiona took the phone, not looking the least bit excited. “Yeah?”
“I heard you were well-behaved at home today,” Jace said.
Wiona almost rolled her eyes so hard they might get stuck. She was so done with this whole loving husband act. Her reply came out cold and sharp. “If that’s all you have to say, I’m hanging up.”
“Wait,” Jace blurted. “Wiona, something big happened at the company today. I can’t come home. Promise me you’ll eat and get some rest, okay? If you behave, I’ll bring you another gift tomorrow.”
He was holding a small velvet box, inside it a necklace he’d just bid for at auction. It was costly, the kind of thing that would make anyone’s eyes light up. He actually wanted to give it to her. Honestly, he was still mad, but once he cooled off, the guilt crept in. This time, he really wanted to make things right.
A faint smile tugged at his lips. She hadn’t seemed to care for the ring this morning. Maybe she’d like the necklace better.
“If you’re with Kellen, don’t bother making up stories for me,” Wiona said quietly. “Because, honestly, I don’t care.”
She hung up with a click and handed the phone back to George.
“If you let his calls through again, I’ll smash your phone.”
George clutched his phone like it was his last lifeline. He had no clue how the gentle young mistress had turned into someone so fierce overnight. It was getting tough to keep up with her.
Wiona went straight to her room and locked the door behind her.
Left out in the hallway again, Marian looked exhausted. She turned to George, sounding pitiful. “Do I really need to stay on watch again tonight? Can’t someone else take over? My old bones aren’t made for this…”
