“I’ve been so worried about you,” Kellen said softly, her palm gently resting against Jace’s cheek.
Jace’s eyes softened. He couldn’t deny it. He had been avoiding her on purpose these past few days. Of course he loved her. Kellen was so good to him, always putting him first, her whole world revolving around him. He loved her as much as ever. She was nothing like Wiona, who was always cold one moment and indifferent the next, so hard to read, so impossible to please. Wiona could make him furious, leave him helpless, and yet... he could never seem to let her go.
Everything at home had changed overnight. Suddenly Jace had become the pillar holding up the entire Salisbury family and the backbone of the corporation. At least the news about his father stabbing his mother was still tightly locked down. If that got out... he didn’t even want to imagine the fallout.
Even so, Salisbury Corporation was already facing a huge crisis. Several of their most important business partners had dropped them without warning. It was a nightmare, and Jace was stuck at the office, unable to even visit the hospital.
Jace reached for Kellen’s hand, holding it gently.
He tried to explain, keeping his voice calm. “Kellen, I rushed things last time when I brought you out into the open. It put so much pressure on my family and the company. You paid the price for that, and I’m sorry. We need to slow down and take things from the top. Just give me a little more time. Once I’ve got a better hold on everything, no one will be able to keep you away from me. For now, Salisbury Corporation can’t handle another scandal. I have to keep you out of sight. So, Kellen, I’m asking you to wait for me, just a little longer.”
He tapped her nose lightly, trying to lighten the mood. Seeing her always put him at ease. It was nothing like the tension he felt with Wiona, who wouldn’t let him get close, no matter how hard he tried. That thought dug at him. Did she really not care about him anymore? Or was she just playing hard to get because of Kellen?
Kellen nodded, her eyes filling with tears. She was furious inside, but she forced herself to look sweet and innocent, managing a shaky smile. “Okay. If it’s for you, Jace, I can wait. I’ll wait as long as you need.”
She hesitated, then asked quietly, “I just want to know... how are our babies? Has Wiona had any checkups lately? I’d love to see her, just to feel her belly. I really miss our kids...”
She was dropping a reminder. No matter what Wiona was going through, she was carrying Kellen’s children.
Jace’s face went still.
That was one secret Wiona could never, ever find out. If she did, with how she was now, she’d leave him without a second thought.
His expression darkened and he tightened his grip on Kellen’s arm.
“Kellen, if the truth gets out, Wiona will never agree to have those babies. You have to be careful. Don’t say a word. You have to act like you know nothing. Only then will you have a chance to claim the kids later. Do you hear me?”
Wiona could not, under any circumstances, learn the truth.
