Wiona knew her pregnancy made her a burden right now, and the thought drove her crazy. Still, they had finally escaped the Salisbury estate. There was no way she was going back.
She glanced around, then gave Molly a gentle push.
“This isn’t working. Listen to me, Molly. I’ll go find a place to hide. You meet up with Mason, then come back for me when things calm down. If we stick together, we’re both getting caught.”
Wiona didn’t wait for Molly to argue. She spotted a tree nearby and, without hesitation, started climbing. For someone pregnant, she moved with surprising speed.
Molly stared, eyes huge. Was this really the same Wiona? She’d been ready to protest, but seeing Wiona scale that tree like a pro, she just thought, okay, fair enough.
Honestly, Molly was impressed. She had no idea Wiona used to be on her college’s rock climbing team. Heights, windows, even walls were never an issue for her. She had never been the helpless type.
Molly glanced back. Flashlight beams were already weaving through the darkness. She couldn’t waste another second.
“Please, hide somewhere good! Wait for us!” she whispered, then took off at full speed into the shadows.
Wiona tucked herself into the thickest part of the leafy branches. Thank goodness it was nighttime. She’d have a much harder time hiding if it was light out.
It wasn’t long before the Salisbury guards arrived. They found the hole in the bushes, but no sign of anyone around. Frustrated, some pushed forward while others fanned out to search.
“Any idea who got away?”
“I think it was Molly!”
“She had help. Someone inside took out our men, or we’d have her by now!”
“There was help on both sides, right under our noses! Unbelievable!”
“What about Wiona?”
“They’re checking the guest villa now.”
Word came back quickly—Wiona was missing again. And Marian couldn’t be woken, no matter what they tried.
Now, panic was setting in.
“This is bad. If she disappears again, we’re all screwed.”
“There are so many of us, and we can’t watch one person? Security here is a joke.”
“Tell Mr. Salisbury.”
