“You care so much about Sophie, always standing up for her. What about your own daughter? Or do you just not have one?”
Annette couldn’t take it anymore. She slapped Conrad, her hand stinging with anger.
“I’m your mother. How can you talk to me like this? Everything I’ve done, I did for you. And Alice… If I have to live under the same roof as her, I’ll lose my mind just like she has. Is that what you want? A crazy sister and a crazy mom? Would that finally make you happy?”
Conrad didn’t even try to dodge the slap. He just stared at her, eyes locked on hers, not backing down.
And what about me? I’m your son. Why do you keep scheming against me? Why do you always take the side of outsiders? Why can’t you care about me, just once? Why did you leave Alice and me behind, just to run away from everything?
He never said any of that out loud. He never would. The anger faded from his face, and when his eyes went cold, he turned away.
“Looks like we’re done talking.”
He left without looking back. Just as he reached the stairs, he stopped and turned, pointing at the maid Wiona had noticed earlier.
“If she’s one of your spies, you better take her with you if you want her to live. Otherwise, you’ll see how I punish traitors.”
The maid dropped to the floor, wailing. “Sir, she had nothing to do with it. Please, spare me. I was just… I don’t know what I was thinking…”
Libby’s expression darkened. She stepped forward and slapped the maid, hard.
“You know the rules in this house. Why did you betray Mr. Sullivan? We can’t keep you here anymore.”
He gave a look to the other servants, and they moved to drag her away.
Annette couldn’t stand it. She stepped in front of them. “Let her go with me. I paid her. I told her what to do. If you want to make an example out of someone, do it to me. I’ll leave. I won’t ever come back.”
She looked around the house, eyes full of disappointment. This place didn’t feel like home anymore.
Donna stepped forward, tears shining in her eyes as she grabbed Annette’s hand.
“Madam, this is the Sullivan family home. You and Mr. Sullivan built your life here. Are you really just going to walk away? I know you’ve suffered, but so have Conrad and Alice. Why are you keeping hurting yourself and your children? Conrad doesn’t hate you. He’s just hurting more than anyone else that you’d go this far. He’s twenty-eight, and he doesn’t have anyone he can truly trust. Are you really willing to push him to the edge? Please let me speak honestly. Conrad isn’t the type to settle. He just needs time. Just like you needed time when you left all those years ago. Didn’t he give you that?”
Donna’s tears spilled over. The memories were just too much. Annette backed away and sank into a chair, defeated.
