Wiona sprang from her chair. “What happened? Why would she end up at an underground casino? I told her not to do anything on her own.”
“I’m not sure either,” Mason replied. “She didn’t come back to the cafe yesterday afternoon, and I couldn’t reach her. I called, but her phone was off. After a while, she texted me, said she had something urgent to take care of and that I shouldn’t worry.”
“It’s my fault. I didn’t think much of it. This morning, I got a message from Dr. Monroe. He said he saw Molly at a West End underground casino last night. She was taken away by some guys.”
“He asked if she made it back.”
“By the time I realized something was wrong, I couldn’t get in touch with her at all.”
“People disappear from those West End casinos all the time. Boss, I’m worried Molly ran off to look for her dad and got herself in trouble.”
Wiona’s chest tightened with panic. She paced the room, heart pounding.
“I’ll be there soon. We’ll talk then.”
She hung up and changed clothes in a rush, not wasting a second. Then she went to find Libby.
Libby was surprised to see her leaving again. “You only just got back yesterday, and now you’re off again?”
“Ms. Morgan, is there something going on? Do you need our help?”
He was being polite, but Wiona could sense his disapproval.
“Thanks for the offer,” Wiona said. “I’m dealing with some personal stuff. If I need help, I’ll let you know.”
Libby smiled. “Ms. Morgan, you’re a valued guest of the Sullivan family. As long as it helps Miss Sullivan recover, Mr. Sullivan won’t refuse anything you ask.”
Wiona looked at him, catching the real message beneath his words.
Was he reminding her of her place here?
Sure, she was working for the Sullivan family. She wanted to help Alice, she really did. But that didn’t mean she belonged to the Sullivan siblings.
She already had enough messes of her own and she still wasn’t out of the woods. If Conrad hadn’t been pushing so hard, she wouldn’t keep running herself ragged like this.
She could’ve just waited until her divorce with Jace was finalized before coming to earn this money. Conrad knew what she was dealing with from the start.
Why should she have to ask for permission just to leave?
“If I end up missing too much work, I’ll ask to delay my schedule,” she said. “If Mr. Sullivan isn’t satisfied, I can return my salary or pay a penalty if I have to. But no matter what, I’ll do whatever I can for Alice.”
Because Conrad really had helped her out with her art, and Wiona remembered that. Plus, she liked Alice and felt for her. Even if she didn’t get paid, she wouldn’t just walk away.
Before Libby could react, Wiona left.
She went to Donna and asked for a car. Getting a ride up here was nearly impossible otherwise.
