“Wait.”
Just as they were about to walk out the front doors, a wave of men in black suits appeared, moving as one, blocking their way. Each man wore sunglasses, hands clasped behind his back, standing there like a wall.
Everyone else nearby took one look at the scene and hurried off in the opposite direction. Clearly, this sort of thing happened all the time here.
Wiona’s heart was racing. How could Ecstasy get away with this, just throwing their weight around in front of everyone? It was like nobody cared about the law.
The big guy stepped up, putting himself in front of Wiona and the others. “I thought our business was done. Why are you stopping us now?”
A tall woman in a sharp black suit, her short hair styled perfectly, strode forward. Her eyes scanned the group, lingering on Wiona.
“We kept our promise to Mr. Eason and let you go,” she said. “But now, Mr. Schmidt would like to meet this young lady.”
She turned her attention fully to Wiona. “You’ve got guts, I’ll give you that, coming to Mr. Schmidt for a favor through Eason. He thinks it’s only fair he meets you in person. That’s not so much to ask, is it?”
She smiled, but there was a challenge in her eyes. “Eason can’t possibly have a problem with this, right?”
The big guy glanced back at Wiona, and for a second, she saw him smirk, as if remembering how she’d chewed him out earlier. He stepped aside, clearly happy to let her deal with the mess.
“Ms. Morgan, maybe you should go see Mr. Schmidt,” he said, barely hiding his amusement. “Better to have him as a friend than an enemy. Who knows when you’ll cross paths again.”
He figured his job was done. He’d gotten her this far, and that was all he’d been told to do. Whether she made it out after this… well, that was her problem, not his. Honestly, after the way she talked to him before, he was almost looking forward to seeing what would happen.
Wiona kept her cool. She just asked, “What time is it?”
Dr. Monroe checked his watch, his hands shaking. “It’s… it’s ten o’clock.”
“Wiona, they’re stalling us on purpose,” he whispered. “If we wait any longer, there’s no way to save Adler.”
