Alona shoved Kellen out of the way, spun her wheelchair around, and hurried after them.
“Jace!”
Jace spotted Wiona waiting by the elevator. A flash of hope lit up his eyes, and he rushed over.
“Wiona, wait, just listen to me…”
The elevator chimed and the doors slid open. Wiona stepped inside right away. The elevator, though, was already packed tight. Jace tried to follow, but there was no room.
“Get out. Come on, get out.”
He pressed his hand against the elevator doors, his face dark and determined, trying to force her to step back out.
Wiona stayed put. The other passengers stared at Jace like he’d lost his mind.
“Sir, are you filming some drama? Can you take it somewhere else?” someone muttered.
“This is a hospital. People’s lives are at stake here. Could you please move?” said another, annoyance in their voice.
“Seriously, who does he think he is, some CEO or something?”
Wiona’s lips curled into a cold, mocking smile as she stared Jace down. The elevator doors closed, shutting him out. Jace stood there, helpless, and slammed his fist against the wall.
Alona finally caught up, her face full of worry for her son. “Jace, it’s already gone this far. You should just get the divorce over with.”
“If she goes public with all this, how are we supposed to face anyone? Our family would be a joke.”
“The company is barely hanging on, trouble at every turn, and now things are falling apart at home too. We can’t handle a scandal right now.”
“Jace?”
He barely seemed to hear her. Suddenly, he looked up, eyes wide.
He was sure he’d seen it. Just before the doors closed, Wiona had mouthed something to him.
Nineteen. The number 19.
“She’s headed to the nineteenth floor.”
“That’s grandmother’s floor.”
“What’s she planning? Is she going to tell Grandma what just happened?”
“Or is she going to say she wants a divorce?”
“No way. That can’t happen.”
“Grandma can’t handle any more bad news. If she finds out, she might not make it.”
Alona’s anxiety spiked. “Jace, we still haven’t gotten what we need from your grandmother. We can’t let anything happen to her now.”
“What are you waiting for? Let’s go, now, to the nineteenth floor.”
Somehow, the urgency cleared Jace’s mind. He pulled out his phone.
“Hey. Get to Grandma Grace’s room. Don’t let Wiona anywhere near her. Got it?”
After calling the bodyguards, Jace used his connections to get access to the VIP elevator. There was no way he’d wait for that slow, stuffy public one.
When he and Alona finally reached the nineteenth floor, they found out that Wiona hadn’t even been there.
Jace frowned. “Did I get it wrong?”
But he couldn’t shake the image of Wiona’s lips clearly saying nineteen.
Alona let out a breath. “Jace, looks like Wiona’s gone.”
