“How dare you come here and demand the truth from me? Who do you think you are?”
Grandma Grace had just woken up today, only to find Bianca standing at her bedside. Bianca was talking, saying all sorts of weird things, but Grandma Grace had managed to piece some things together. She couldn’t believe it, couldn’t accept that the truth might really be what she feared.
The shock was too much for her. Her blood pressure shot up. She clutched her chest, struggling to breathe, her body trembling even as she lay in bed.
Daniel rushed to her side, panic written all over his face. “Mom! Hey, Mom, can you hear me? Mom, please, don’t scare me…”
Alona saw Bianca and immediately felt the ground slipping out from under her. It was over. Everything was over. Grandma Grace must have found out something—something huge.
Alona spun around and slapped Jace hard across the face. “Didn’t I tell you to keep an eye on her? I said she couldn’t go anywhere until I was discharged. How did she end up at the hospital?”
Whatever that old woman was holding onto, it was vital. Alona wasn’t scared of Grandma Grace dying. She was scared she wouldn’t get her hands on it before she did.
Now, seeing Bianca and Grandma Grace confront each other and hearing Grandma Grace’s furious outburst, Alona knew the secret was slipping out of her grasp.
Jace had already been slapped twice that day, but the chaos exploding around him left him numb, unable to feel anger or do anything but stand there.
He shook his head, frustrated and confused. “I don’t even know how she got out. But why are we locking Bianca up, anyway? What does she know? What’s the point? Mom, what are you keeping from me?”
He turned to Bianca, desperate for answers. “And you, what did you say to Grandma to make her lose it like that? What secrets are you all hiding from me?”
Jace had always known there was some huge secret in this family. It was the reason his father had stabbed his mother. That night, Bianca had been the only one near the room where Daniel and Alona argued. She’d seen Daniel attack Alona. So Bianca had to know something.
Jace hadn’t pressed her, not just because he didn’t have time, but because he was afraid. He had a feeling the truth would be so twisted, so unbelievable, he wouldn’t be able to handle it. So he’d let it go, hoping the whole thing would fade away on its own and they could all just keep pretending to be a normal family.
Sometimes, ignorance can be a relief.
But today, with everything falling apart, the hole inside him just kept getting bigger. He couldn’t lie to himself any longer. He needed to know exactly how bad the truth was.
Alona avoided Jace’s gaze, her voice shaky. “What… what secret? There’s nothing. Your dad and I just had a misunderstanding…”
