Every word out of her mouth was like a slap, and Jace’s jaw clenched so hard you could see the veins popping at his temples.
“If this is just your way of playing hard to get, I’ll give you credit. You’re good at it,” he snapped, flipping through the stack of papers like they were nothing. “You want me to feel sorry for you, to carry guilt, to make me look like the bad guy. Well, congratulations. You’ve done it.”
He tossed the papers down, voice cold. “So, what do you really want? Name your price.”
Wiona watched him, eyes full of pity. She couldn’t figure out how he could possibly be so smug and self-assured.
She tilted her head, a teasing sparkle in her eye. “Mr. Salisbury, you’ve been dragging your feet all morning. Could it be… you actually don’t want to let me go? Maybe you’ve caught real feelings for me?”
She asked it on purpose, a question so ridiculous it hung in the air between them, daring him to deny it. Her gaze lingered on him, openly mocking, watching for his reaction.
As expected, Jace’s face flushed red with anger.
“Never,” he spat. “Wiona, you know exactly who I care about.”
Wiona just shrugged. “So that settles it. You’re hesitating, and for a second there, I almost thought you couldn’t let go of me. What’s the point of Kellen then? Isn’t his whole existence a joke if you still care about me?”
Across the table, the clerk who had been pretending not to listen, suddenly sat up straighter. Was she hearing that right? How could that be possible?
The clerk shot him a disgusted side-eye, while inside she was practically giddy. She’d only read about this celebrity scandal yesterday, and now she was seeing it live. But it kind of did seem like Mr. Salisbury wasn’t ready to say goodbye.
She had to admit, Mrs. Salisbury had guts. Her husband cheats, so she drags him to the office for a divorce, doesn’t let up, and just keeps pressing until he has nowhere to run. And when the other woman came up, Mr. Salisbury didn’t even flinch. No shame at all. What a jerk!
Now that Wiona had said everything out loud, Jace knew that if he waited any longer, it would only look like he actually cared. He grabbed a pen, hesitated for a split second, then finally scrawled his signature.
As soon as he finished, Jace shot the clerk a frosty look. “If any of this gets out, you and your whole department will be hearing from my lawyers.”
The clerk bit back an eye roll, wishing she could just stamp their papers and send them on their way.
She handed over the documents. “There’s a thirty-day reconsideration period. If, after that, you both still want to go through with the divorce, come back and we’ll finalize everything.”
