“Madison, could you grab me something to eat?”
Madison gave her a tired look but nodded anyway. “Sure, of course. You’re basically eating for three right now. Can’t let you go hungry. Hang on, I’ll be back in a minute.” She got up and headed out, leaving Wiona alone in the room.
As soon as Madison left, Wiona hurried to the window. She pulled the curtains back and glanced down into the courtyard. A shadowy figure stood there, hard to make out in the dim light. She watched them for a second, and just as she did, the person looked up at her.
Suddenly, a noise behind her made her jump. Wiona let go of the curtains right away. Jasmine had come rushing in after hearing the commotion.
When Jasmine saw Wiona awake, her eyes immediately filled with tears. “Wiona, my daughter…” She wrapped her arms around Wiona and just sobbed. “You’ve been through so much. I’m so sorry for everything. I should have been better. No matter what, please come home. I’ll protect you from now on. The Morgan family can handle two daughters. You and Madison are both my girls, both Morgan family daughters, no matter what anyone else says. I don’t care what people think or gossip about. I won’t let you suffer again. Please, come back home.”
Wiona just looked at her and asked, “If I want to have the two babies I’m carrying, can I still come back?”
Jasmine’s face went stiff. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out. She tried to speak a couple of times but just couldn’t say the words. She was a mother, after all. She knew how cruel it would be to force Wiona to give up her babies. But Jasmine had never been one to stand her ground. Whatever her husband or son said, she went along with it. Even when she disagreed, she always ended up giving in. That’s how Wiona grew up—taught to be obedient, to be the good woman, because that was supposed to keep the family happy.
In the Morgan house, Kyle and Cole made all the decisions. They were the ones in charge. Wiona’s rebellion now, her refusal to do as she was told, was a direct challenge to all of that. Maybe that was why Kyle was so determined to get rid of her babies.
Wiona had seen through Jasmine long ago. She turned away, her voice cold. “Then stop pretending you want to protect me. Just get out. I don’t want to see you.”
Her words were blunt and final. She was done with fake concern. The coldness in her tone hit Jasmine hard.
“Wiona, how could you talk to me like that? I don’t want to hurt you either… but we’re only thinking of what’s best for you. You’re still so young, already divorced. Why would you want to be stuck raising two children all alone?”
