Wiona cleared her throat, cheeks turning pink as she tried to hide her embarrassment. “It’s... honestly, it’s complicated.” She hesitated for a second, then just came out with it. “The truth is, Jace and I never slept together. Like, never. Not once.”
She remembered how, back when things hadn’t totally fallen apart, she and Jace had shared the main bedroom in the old house. He’d actually made himself a bed on the floor, just so he could stay loyal to Kellen. So even though it looked like they were living together, they’d never even shared a bed, let alone anything else.
Madison stared at her, looking completely baffled. “Wait, so... you never slept with him? But you’re pregnant? Hold on, let me wrap my head around this. Is this what being rich is like? Just, platonic marriages and stuff?”
Wiona reached over and flicked her on the forehead. “Get your mind out of the gutter. He was just holding out for his one true love, okay? Meanwhile, I got tricked by a fake medical report he set up, so I thought I couldn’t have kids. Not long after the whole scandal about our identities came out, I started preparing for IVF. I figured if I couldn’t get close to him, I’d just have a babies on my own. I honestly thought he wanted to take things slow, so I never questioned why nothing happened between us. Looking back now, I’m actually grateful he kept his distance.”
It took Madison a while to process all that. She flopped back on the bed and let out a long sigh. “You really haven’t had it easy... Stuck in a marriage with a guy like that. Makes my life look like a walk in the park.”
Wiona just shrugged and tried to smile. “It’s all in the past now. Anyway, what’s going on with your arranged marriage?”
The question clearly struck a nerve. Madison’s whole face tightened. “What do you think? Everything’s just stuck. Dad’s dead set on marrying me off to the Holmes family, and Mom, well, you know how she is. Useless when it comes to actually standing up for us. The big argument is that Neil’s the only son, so supposedly their whole fortune will go to him. Like that matters when the guy’s a total idiot. Even if he inherits everything, do they really think he’ll keep it? And why should my life be their bargaining chip, just another tool in their business deals? They saw what happened to you, and they’re still pushing me into the same mess. I finally got two years of peace after coming home, and now I’m expected to pay for it with the rest of my life. Honestly, our parents are equally ruthless when it comes to using both their daughters.”
She let out a bitter laugh. “If that’s how it is, I don’t owe this family anything. They brought this on themselves.”
Wiona thought about Neil. He was kind of a joke, always acting like life was a game. And worst of all, he was basically Jace’s sidekick. Anyone who could hang out with Jace for that long had to be trouble. The only good thing was that Madison seemed way more clear-headed than Wiona had ever been.
“So, what are you going to do?” Wiona asked quietly.
Madison rolled her eyes. “When the time comes, I’ll just run for it. For now, I’m keeping my head down.”
