Remy’s eyes sparkled as she heard the news, and she immediately offered a warm congratulations. “Ms. Morgan, that’s wonderful! I’m so happy for you.”
Donna turned at the sound, her gaze suddenly shadowed and intense. Divorced? It had to be because of Conrad. Anyone could see that the Sullivan family was the obvious choice over the Salisburys.
Before Libby left, she’d mentioned that Ms. Morgan might be carrying Conrad’s children. Conrad never would have punished Libby so harshly over something so minor, if it weren’t for that. At first, Donna just saw Wiona as a guest of honor at the estate. She knew Wiona was an artist, and the one person who could help Alice heal. Donna had always treated her with courtesy, even respect. But then, Libby got sent away to Africa, all because of her. Donna only had one daughter. Of course she felt resentment.
After she found out that Wiona was possibly pregnant with Conrad’s children, Donna’s opinion of her plummeted. Libby had said she’d made mistakes and deserved her punishment, but Donna never believed it was truly her fault. If it had been any other girl, even someone completely ordinary, Donna wouldn’t have felt so much disgust. But it had to be Ms. Morgan. She was married, after all. What kind of girl gets involved with another man while she still has a husband? How could she even get pregnant with his child? Donna just couldn’t wrap her head around it. In her mind, Wiona was nothing but trouble. She led Conrad astray.
Donna had practically raised Conrad herself. She felt like she was part of the family. She hadn’t nursed him, but she’d spent way more time with him than his own mother, Annette. She knew Conrad’s personality inside and out. He was strict with himself, a man who kept his life clean and in order. But now he was tied up with Wiona and possibly about to become a father with her. The news had hit Donna like a thunderbolt, leaving her sick at heart.
She didn’t want to believe Conrad could make such a mess of things, but the proof was right there. Donna wasn’t blind. She’d seen the way Conrad looked at Ms. Morgan. There was nothing innocent about it. That realization had left Donna out of sorts for days. After Libby was sent away, her resentment toward Wiona only grew stronger. That’s why Donna’s whole attitude toward Wiona had shifted so suddenly.
If it weren’t for Alice, Donna wouldn’t even want to be in the same room as her. Even now, hearing that Wiona was divorced, Donna was sure it was just a scheme to get closer to the Sullivan family now that the Salisbury family was falling apart. A woman like that wasn’t good enough for Conrad.
“Ms. Morgan, it would be better if you kept your personal matters outside of Hawthorne Hall,” Donna said, her tone just polite enough to hide the warning beneath. “If Alice gets upset, it’ll only make things harder for Mr. Sullivan.”
Wiona heard the message loud and clear, but since she didn’t know about Libby being sent away because of her, she just assumed Donna was worried about Alice. She nodded and said, “Of course, I understand. I’ll take care of it, don’t worry.”
With that, Wiona turned and started heading toward the shuttle cart with Phil. Alice tried to follow.
