Jasmine’s face, always so soft and gentle, twisted with a wild sort of anger. Madison pressed a trembling hand to her cheek, her fury finally running out of steam. She let out a cold laugh and stared straight at her mother.
That look cut right through Jasmine, making her heart clench with pain and a sudden rush of panic. Only then did she realize what she’d just done. She had actually slapped her own daughter.
“I… I…” Jasmine’s voice faltered. “Madison, I didn’t mean to…”
She tried to save face, but Madison was already broken inside.
“Whatever. I know you never really loved me,” Madison said, her voice flat and tired. “So don’t bother pretending anymore.”
She turned and walked back to her room, leaving Jasmine standing there as if all her worst secrets had been dragged into the light. But how could she ever admit the truth?
Embarrassed and furious, Jasmine called out, “Leila, come here! For the next two days, Madison is not to leave the house. She’s to stay in her room and think about her behavior.”
Leila nodded. “Yes, ma’am.”
Finally, Jasmine sank into the sofa, rubbing her temples and feeling completely drained. She’d lost her temper. Still, this wasn’t all on her. The Morgan family was a disaster lately, everything out of control, and Madison just had to make things worse. Was that any way for a daughter to talk to her mother? She needed to learn a lesson. Madison’s life was so much better now, and the more she got, the less she appreciated. She wasn’t even half as nice as Wiona used to be.
Thinking of Wiona made Jasmine’s chest ache again. Was her Wiona really never coming home?
Elsewhere, someone else had seen the news and understood everything right away: Jace.
He sat on his hospital bed, completely stunned, replaying the video over and over. When he saw the words “marry me, Wiona” in the sky, his eyes went red and raw. He stared at the proposal, refusing to believe it. Conrad, that bastard, actually proposed to Wiona? She was his wife. How could Conrad do that?
“Your father is calling.”
