Sophie’s face went from numb and dazed to wide-eyed and shocked. Then, for the first time in ages, a spark of hope flickered in her eyes. She stared at Donna, almost breathless. “Donna, are you serious? All of this is true? Wiona… she actually slept with Conrad? So that babies she’s carrying are his? No wonder… it all makes sense now! I kept wondering why Conrad would ever propose to her, but he had no choice, did he? Because of the baby! I knew he must have his reasons!”
Donna watched Sophie practically vibrate with emotion, and it only made her more certain that Sophie’s love for Conrad had crossed the line into obsession. After everything Conrad had done, Sophie still found it in her to forgive him in her heart. It was sad, really. With her background, she and Conrad could never actually end up together. But, Donna thought, she could still be useful.
Donna’s eyes flashed with calculation, but when she looked up again, her face was all gentle concern. “Of course, Ms. Clements. Conrad used to be so close to you. If he didn’t know deep down that things were impossible between you, he’d never treat you like this.”
Sophie shook her head, her voice trembling. “I don’t care about any of that! I could spend my whole life single, but what he did… it still hurt me. Still, I get it. He needs an heir for the Sullivan Group. What really gets me is how sneaky Wiona is. She’s fooled my aunt completely. How am I supposed to just sit here and let that happen? My aunt and Conrad both need to see that this woman will only bring trouble to the Sullivan family. Donna, you’re right. I have to make them see the truth before it’s too late. It’s just a proposal so far. There’s still time.”
She grabbed Donna’s arm, clinging to the burst of determination she’d just found. “Donna, I need your help.”
A shadow fell over Sophie’s face. Her eyes darkened with resolve.

Later, when Shelly came to give her report, Wiona just let out a soft laugh, barely more than a huff. Conrad, ever alert, caught the sound.
He leaned over and asked quietly, “Since when do you have loyal informants in my house?”
Wiona looked at him sideways. “This place is huge. If I didn’t have anyone watching my back, I’d be chewed up and spit out in no time. Do you have a problem with that, Mr. Sullivan?”
Conrad’s lips curled into a small, amused smile. “No problem at all. I like it. You did the right thing.”
